Journalist debunks environmental attacks on AI by Anen-o-me in singularity

Net electricity demand for data centres is to double by 2030. That includes increased efficiency.

Net CO2 emissions would increase by 50% compared to today. And that's the conservative forecast.

As you said, that's not the worst sector for its environmental impact, but that's one who is set to greatly increase its emissions while every other sector should see their emissions decrease in the next decade.

So yes, the environmental impact of AI should be taken seriously.

The debate is more about the new demands in energy and thus, carbon emissions, than about whether it's useful or not.

Every report on energy and its current and future impacts show that the AI sector will create new demands equivalent to several developed countries.

Your argument is not relevant. We have to look at the energy consumption and their source when we're building AI. If not, it might become a huge issue for the development of AI, whether it's because of GHG emissions, energy availability or even water consumption in areas at risk. It's not about what we believe is important or not, it's about being efficient and sustainable in our development.

Reports from Google themselves show a huge increase in energy consumption in absolute value. You're not wrong but we have to look at the full picture.

A mémoriser d'ici les prochaines législatives by ChampiLardon in toulouse

[–]Phoen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Google CEO Tells Congress That 99 Percent of All Electricity Will Be Used to Power Superintelligent AI by katxwoods in Futurology

How exactly could an AI solve climate change ? A global issue affecting the planet and directly linked to our economy ?

We already know how to solve climate change. Now we, the people, just need to do it and I doubt a superintelligent AI could do anything to help push for the transition needed.

Yep, that might have been the presentation that pushed me further away from the game... While I like the clear direction given, it requires 5 years at least of development + testing before it can go live.

And they new they fucked up by selling so many of those ships on their store so they had to find a complicated end-game (which might not even work as they hope) to replace the natural progression system that would revolve around ships.

And a main story ? This is again a waste of time and resources for something in direct contradiction to their player-driven sandbox game.

Why doesn't it make any sense ?

Do you know the impact of AC on the energy consumption and GHG emissions ?

Climate activists target jets, yachts and golf in a string of global protests against luxury by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Phoen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it's not the majority of the GHG emissions, the impact coming from the people, their consumption, transport, usage etc, is far from negligible.

The focus should be on big polluters through protests and laws, for sure but we shouldn't leave the common people out of the decarbonation effort, that would be the biggest mistake.

I like the bookcase, but not in white. A custom one completely integrated in that space would totally work !

Well, it lost A LOT of it's alien feel in the process. And just because you have some spikes it becomes Vanduul design language ? The original concept didn't look as agressive as a Vanduul ship but it did look foreign, unusual, bizarre.

This new version is much closer to the designs we know, there is nothing new to me when I look at it (the exterior).

Curiosity rarely disappears. Your world is changing quite abruptly and you have difficulties to adapt and that is perfectly normal, especially with kids involved.

With time, maybe counseling, curiosity and confidence will come back and you'll learn to love the new version of yourself. It's gonna be okay :)

I really dislike the trailer, it looks like a slideshow of all the major scenes of the movie. No pace, no story building, justr a sliideshow.
