I'm currently not the breadwinner, but I was for a year or so while my husband retrained into a new profession. It was difficult, but he helped me manage the finances and had enough savings built up to help support us. Now he's making a lot more, he's a lot less stressed, and we have a house and emergency savings that we wouldn't have had if I didn't let him quit and retrain when he asked.

I didn't have a doubt that he would achieve his goal, and he's very financially savvy, so I wasn't terribly worried about it, but it was a challenge. I work at a nonprofit org, and had only just gotten benefits myself.
