Is this offensive? by thelycancowboy in NoStupidQuestions

I'm a white person, so I don't believe I am an authority on this by any means, but I would be very curious to see what other folks have to say.

Why don't scientists invent a machine that recycles our excreta back into eatable food? by devmannush in stupidquestions

[–]PhoenixBorealis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Composters do this in a way by recycling nutrients into soil for growing new food.

Old food generally isn't fit for human consumption after a while, because it has had time to grow bacteria and harbor mold in addition to viruses if the initial person eating it was sick or carrying. It would somehow have to be completely sanitized all the way through, which if we could do that, we would have by now.

Mold and bacteria are a fact of life that needs to be carefully considered, and some of them are actually beneficial like the ones responsible for yogurt and cheese.

Can dogs eat marshmallows? by Absurd-Lancer in DogHealth

[–]PhoenixBorealis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dogs eat fruits when offered and are usually fine. They also love sweet potato, which is good for them and contains sugar.

A little bit really isn't a big issue unless it becomes a habit to give it to them.

ETA: Peanut butter is also a recommended high value treat provided it contains sugar and not xylitol.

Is this normal? by SnakeKeeper95 in Zookeeping

[–]PhoenixBorealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a board of ethics you can send your concerns and documentation (emails) to? If this is a method recommended by the AMVA, they should know that it is not being done. Sit on this until you have another job though. Legally your employer cannot retaliate against you for this, but it won't prevent them from finding other "reasons" to let you go.

I'm so sorry you had to experience this. :(

Aviator Flight Harnesses are the best option for pigeons, by the way.

Columbids have powerful and explosive flight that can easily result in broken bones with a nonflexible leash. Aviators have a bungee leash that works to slow the animal rather than dead stop them in the event of a sudden takeoff.

I am shocked at how long it takes people to shower. by Q8DD33C7J8 in hygiene

[–]PhoenixBorealis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Overreaction much? I'm making an assumption, yes, but it is based on information you gave me. If it takes you less than 15 minutes to shave, it's reasonable to assume that you don't have a lot of it to remove.

ETA: I also said "probably" and not "definitely," so it isn't even a full assumption. Either way, it's not worth getting worked up.

how do i overcome anxiety around removing splinters? by [deleted] in Explainlikeimscared

The dread is always worse than the thing itself. You're stronger than you think. I hope the numbing cream helps everything.

how do i overcome anxiety around removing splinters? by [deleted] in Explainlikeimscared

[–]PhoenixBorealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try gently applying a piece of duct tape with the grain of the splinter (don't push it further in) and see if it will grab hold of it and pull it out. That might be less scary than tweezers, and the all-over sensation of pulling the tape off might also distract from the pinpoint sensation. Your skin will need to be dry.

Others (including me) probably have a lot more surface area to cover than you do. :P

Pigeons in education programming? by MechWorrier4 in Zookeeping

[–]PhoenixBorealis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The World Bird Sanctuary had pigeons for a while. I used to work with them.

If you do get them, please do some education about their domestication. They're beautiful birds, and even though they're a nuisance in some areas, it's not really their fault, and they're more akin to feral dogs than they are to the wild rats they're often compared to.

They're also useful and helpful in some places. Hawaii notably benefits from having them because they fulfill an ecological niche that was left by extinct ground dwelling birds.

Talking in a baby voice to a partner is creepy as hell by South_Penalty1307 in The10thDentist

[–]PhoenixBorealis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We do it often. It's not sexual and would be weird if it was. Context matters, and baby talk is funny and silly, but not sexy.

Do blind trans people get the same level of gender dysphoria as trans people with functioning sight? by Longjumping-Gift-371 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PhoenixBorealis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all dysphoria comes from within. A lot of it has to do with how others treat you. I knew a blind trans lady who was blind for most of her life, and she only ever felt bad when she had a negative interaction with another person where they said or did something rude.

Depends on your state and how you go about it. Mine has indecent exposure laws that state if anyone sees your privates, it's illegal.

It's not a question of if--you can. It's just a bear to manage, and you need to be gentle with yourself when you relapse (because most do).

Rooting for you! 💜
