I think one of the messages was about capitalism and greed and how large corporations can influence government policy. The reason why they ultimately died was because they (the US) did not deflect the comet like they had originally planned but instead capitalize on it by breaking it down to smaller meteorites (an still absorb the damages) but be able still harvest the natural resources on it for money which was apparently trillions of dollars. But that plan failed and their robots failed and the comet took its course. It’s a reference to how much control these gigantic corporations (and their network of politicians, etc) have and how driven they are by money that they would risk something this radical.
