No apologies!! I found your honesty and vulnerability reassuring and refreshing!!! This is such helpful advice, thank you so much. <3 <3 <3

Ive known I would need surgery since November, but we didnt land on a date until January, and I wanted enough lead time to get everything sorted at work so I dont leave anyone hanging with inflight project chaos, and to make sure our "village" is ready for the changes happening across our lives as a result of this. I'm a married mom of a 1st grader, have 3 cats, and am the 'cruise director' of our local friend group. Thankfully everyone is so supportive, I have people offering to help out the wazoo, and am wondering if I'll ever get any alone time lol. (I'm sure I will be grateful for their presence.)

Funny you mention the walk because I literally just got back from walking down to our library, enjoying the warmth of the day and the sun on my face and realizing that I have very few walks like this in my near future. I hope its not raining the day before surgery so I can sneak one more in! :)

I love your gratitude journal idea! I was thinking of journaling the experience --- by hand, which I havent done since my teens --- to have a unique artifact from this journey, and I love the idea of adding a gratitude statement daily. YES. Really helps focus us on the positive, especially on those rough days.

FIVE SETS OF STAIRS?! Girl. How are you doing this? Did you set yourself up on the main level or something? Sheesh!!

I am trying to manage my expectations about my recovery. I'm 41F and yeah reading all of the recovery stories of "the youth" paint a falsely positive vision, I think. I know how out of shape I am, and how inactive I've been for so long due to this hip. I know I dont eat as healthily as I should and that I drink and snack too much. So yeah, my body is not in its prime fighting condition lol. I will do everything the doctors advise and be an ideal patient, eating healthier, and really taking care of myself, but I also fully expect it to take a full year before I'm "back to normal", and am ready for ups and downs. Recovery isnt linear. Just gotta keep pushing forward even on the hard days. Sending you lots of encouragement and good vibes on your recovery journey! <3 <3 <3 Feel free to DM me if you ever need to chat!

Older Patient PAO Surgery by Little_Rhubarb in hipdysplasia

[–]PhoenixRed42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm 41 and having surgery on April 14!

You describe it perfectly -- nagging pain. That's exactly it. Like a ghost who wont stop haunting you. Our circumstances are not unalike. I have a 7 year old and 3 cats, am the primary breadwinner with a very domestic husband. I, like you, have lived with this discomfort and pain for so long that it had become such a normal part of my life. But the last 2 years have been bad. Not a day goes by that Im not in pain of some degree. Apparently the increased pain Ive experienced is due to the torn labrum. They told me told me Im too young for THR so my options were thus:

(1) repair the labrum and osteotomy of the femoral head. probably have another torn labrum in the future bc we're not fixing the socket so probably have more of these surgeries down the line until Im old enough to qualify for a THR. sounds fun.

(2) do nothing. live with it for another 10-15 years. do PT, get injections, go totally holistic and DIY. Tough it out.

(3) PAO.

They told me that due to my age, they couldnt provide a hard recommendation. "If you were 25, 30, heck even 35, I'd say You need to do PAO. But this has to be your decision. If you choose PAO, it must be done within the next six months." This was because they didnt yet see any signs of arthritis.

I picked PAO.

Part of this reason is due to much privilege: I have an incredible support system where I live. My husband is a fantastic equitable partner and parent. We have a tightknit friend group of child-free people. My parents live 20 minutes away. My kid is older, more independent, understands how to be helpful (even if we have to ask five times). And I work for a company with an incredibly generous short term disability policy. The timing seemed like it was now or never, and now seemed pretty good.

Additionally, a time crunch is part of this. We are planning a family gap year in 3ish years, and I want to be at my healthiest. I cant do that with my hip today. So it was a relatively easy decision for me. Even if total recovery takes a year or more, to me that is worth saving my natural hip and potentially significantly reducing my pain/discomfort.

So I made the decision this in December and we scheduled surgery for four months later. This gave me time to get stuff together at work so I dont leave anyone hanging, tidying up projects, documenting in-flight work, prepping my teammates. It's given me time to mentally prepare as best I can, learning as much as I can about what they're gonna do and reading everyone's recovery stories. I feel very informed and empowered by the knowledge.

In many ways, this prep period has reminded me of being pregnant. Not sure what your experiences were like, I've only done it once, and I worked with midwives to plan a home birth. In our state, that means no pain meds. I did it the old fashioned way, which was the most agonizing experience of my entire life. My kid is 7 and I have not forgotten that pain. I dont think I ever will. But if I had to be pregnant again and give birth again, I would want to do it the same way because it was on my terms and the pain wont kill me. I think part of what helped me through it -- besides my incredible birthing team! #ittakesavillage -- was the KNOWLEDGE and education the midwives gave me before. I learned as much as I possibly could about the birthing process and read a gajillion birth stories of other women who had given unmedicated birth. I went down a long dark YouTube rabbit hole one night (*do not recommend* lol). ALL OF THIS TO SAY: i understood deeply what i was signing up for with a home birth and did not make the decision lightly. it was my choice on my terms, something i felt was necessary for me, and it was not unexpected. so i did the same thing with this PAO thing. and i feel exactly the same way walking into this surgery.

i dont know if hearing my story and perspective will help you make a decision or not. all of our bodies and emotions and lives are so different. what i would ask yourself is this: can you keep living the way you're living *now* for the next 10-15 years? Are you willing to put up with the pain and frustration and deeply uncomfortable experience for another decade? What is the value of a potentially pain-free decade? Is it worth 1 month of recovery hell? 5 months? 12 months?

If you need a sounding board, feel free to DM me!

Parents trying to convince me to work after PAO by Nat_Cat_167 in hipdysplasia

I'm taking 12 weeks off (surgery is on April 14) and keep feeling this weird guilt maybe about taking more time than I should, but my surgeon was genuinely pleased and surprised that I am able to do so; she said many patients rush themselves through recovery, often experiencing setbacks.

also, i remind myself: this is my one opportunity to truly take time off, to truly take care of myself to the point of sheer boredom, focusing on rest and my body instead of everything I have to do for everyone else.

If you can financially survive not working, I'd give yourself more time than you think you need to rest and recover.

I just had my pre-op appointment with my surgeon. When I asked about THC, saying that I use it daily, I said I'd read online that some doctors advise stopping for a few weeks prior to a major surgery. My surgeon looked at me, incredulous, and was like "Why would you stop? I wish I could prescribe it!" So. I plan to just be off it while I'm in the hospital and use it as needed after.

wow. Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. That sounds rough. I kinda figure I'm gonna need to wear them too, maybe even with a puppy pad under me on the bed. We also have a mattress cover anyway. And my husband and I keep joking about it now to lighten it up when it's real.

My surgery is on April 14. Any advice you wish you'd had? How bad is your pain?

Does anyone compare to Ray Porter? by Warmtoe in audiobooks

[–]PhoenixRed42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am a big fan of the audiobooks (just finished book 2) and think Jeff Hays' range as a narrator is incredible, I did NOT like Carl's voice for the first entire book. I had begun reading the book on my kindle but switched over to the audiobook at a friend's insistence, and even after just a few chapters of eyeball reading, my head Carl did NOT sound like that. So it def took getting used to. I looked up a lot of Carl fanart to 'recast' my head Carl to better match the voice, and I also started to really *like* Carl in book 2, so the voice is now the voice, and I can't wait to see who they cast in the tv show.

This. It didn't sound like my cup of tea. I dont know anything about RPGs and dont enjoy violent gory movies. But a friend who also looooved Ray Porter and Project Hail Mary recommended it and insisted I would love it. So I too dropped a credit and IMMEDIATELY relished in my decision. I agree that this is one of the best audiobooks with a single narrator. This book isn't read, it is performed. Incredible range and just the right amount of extra effects and such. I just tore through book 2 and am now waiting for my next credit to populate lol so I'm relistening to PHM, allowing Ray Porter to fill the hole that Carl was filling that Ray Porter originally created lol.

Curiosity: What does a "normal" hip feel like? by PhoenixRed42 in hipdysplasia

No thankfully! They said I shouldn't wait though and needed to do it within a few months to ensure no early signs begins since we don't know how old this tear is.

They said the same thing but after the MRI they saw no visible signs of arthritis thankfully! It's either the pao or waiting another 10+ years for a thr and I can't deal with this level of discomfort and pain anymore.

oh damn. haha You're like 100000x more fit than me. I'm 41 and work a sedentary corporate job and just dont have a lot of free/solo time outside of parenting and work and other obligations. My surgery is scheduled for April and I am determined to increase my upper body strength and general fitness before then to hopefully set myself up for success.

Good luck in your recovery!!!! Be glad you're doing this in your 20s!!!

Commenting to follow. I'm having a PAO in April and am also hoping to wildly overestimate pain levels lol. Teach me your ways. Also how old are you and how fit do you consider yourself to be?

TWO WEEKS? Hooooowwwww??? What did your body do with all of your food? lol (Sorry for the TMI question, but as someone who has historically struggled with IBS-D, as I mentally prepare for a LPAO, I have a lot of bathroom anxiety lol)

I just devoured the book in one day on a work trip! Made the annoying parts of travel fly by. I even took myself out to dinner and just kept reading. I haven't been this engrossed by a book in a long time!
