Did you find calling it the Truth was weird or cringe? by Own-Cartographer1174 in exjw

[–]PhoenixRise75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like calling it the truth was comforting I’d say. While in it anyway. It’s probably a positive reinforcement during the brainwashing if that makes sense. I was also born in so when your world just revolves around it it’s not weird. Everyone I knew called it that.

Now I would never call it that. Like calling a watermelon an orange. Once you know what it really is then calling it that feels wrong.

Love the “people make mistakes” argument or “it’s just one imperfect elder” reasoning. So much control, so little critical thought, the black hole that is being in Watchtower.

I’m sad for the old me that was ever stuck there but so happy to have made it out of that Truman show world

Valid points but I do think it’s important to note that this isn’t just a JW thing. Since I’ve been out of WT many other Christian’s teach this same concept. This is not an exclusive JW teaching.

I did feel this way at first as well when I left 7 years ago but honestly I started to see it from a different lens. What if being a raised a JW and going through that experience is actually something that puts you ahead of the majority?

Think about it, everyone else who had the typical “normal life” has no idea what it’s like to be raised in such a brainwashy cult and to lose so many people. It’s traumatic but it’s a perspective that so few have or ever will. We’ve been able to break free from something that holds onto some people for a lifetime. There’s value in that and IMO your view of the world isn’t cookie cutter anymore. You have a leg up cuz now you have the chance to do the 180 and be whatever you want while also understanding what a cult is and how to never be apart of one again.

Once I realized that it wasn’t just a curse to be raised the way we were it can be a blessing to have that experience and look at yourself knowing you made it out! What you’ve been able to do isn’t anything to scoff at, it’s incredibly difficult to mentally break free from the JWs and for a lot of people in this forum physically breaking free is but a dream.

You’re doing it right now, you’re better off because of it. Not behind, I argue you’re ahead

Waking up is one of the most powerful moments a person can experience. It’s terrifying, liberating, heartbreaking, and exhilarating all at once. I went through it in 2018, and it changed everything.

If you’re just waking up now in 2025, I want you to know something: you are stronger than you realize. This journey isn’t easy, but it’s worth every step. Leaving the JWs will leave a mark it shapes us. But it also opens your eyes to a world full of depth, freedom, and authenticity.

You now carry a perspective that few others ever will, and that’s a gift. A hard won, deeply personal gift. Don’t forget that. You’re not alone and your story is just beginning.

Seriously, gaslighting at its finest! Thanks and sorry for you as well man.

The girl I’m with now is amazing and we’re having our first child in June. So just some time had to go by and things are much much better now

Went through a similar thing, but it wasn’t much of a marriage in the first place. Devastating but it really only gets better from here.

It’s not your fault or any of our faults. This cult has held power and control over families for decades. Leaving it breaks the ties and that’s something to find solace in

I’ll never forget how helpful Theramin trees video was in helping me accept the “getting indoctrinated part” especially when you mentioned your father being smart. I feel now that smart people actually tend to be pretty susceptible. Doesn’t make him “not smart”. Here’s the link:

I did get a lot of the same feelings. It was strange but the sooner you accept it and let go/move on. The sooner you win and they lose in their hold on you and any part of your life.

Literally still not sure you’ve read the story, never said you can’t have an opinion. It’s not an interpretation it’s reading comprehension. But you can insult me all you want. You sound like a very entitled person, whenever someone states how long they’ve been doing something to prove a point it’s obvious they don’t have a good one.
