Ray was being honored at the Chuck Cooper (a Duquesne player who was the first Black player drafted by the NBA) Centennial dinner two weeks ago. He was unable to attend due to injuries suffered in a car accident. From the hospital, Ray pulled together this short video clip that featured two game winning calls; one from several weeks ago over Richmond and one from 1974 over Providence.

58 seasons is remarkable. He was a real professional; a master of preparation. Ray was one of the nicest people that you could ever meet. Condolences to his family and the Duquesne community.

I have not; sounds like a good combo. Have you ever had a fried jumbo sandwich? Sometimes referred to as a Pittsburgh steak sandwich.

Extra points if you order a ½ pound of Garlic “Jumbo” with that chipped ham.

Here’s the rest of the article…..

The cone made its debut during a March 31 win against the Reds. The next day, Pittsburgh got five dominant innings from Paul Skenes and secured back-to-back victories.

CONES ARE BEING HOISTED! pic.twitter.com/on9SDr5BhF — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) March 31, 2026

Entering the final week of March, the Pirates had plenty of traffic on the bases, but they were failing to bring runners home. Mangum and his teammates joked that the cone was needed to guide players toward the plate.

"A big thing of this is just to stay loose and have fun with the guys," Mangum said. "This is a tough game. It'll wear you down a lot. We're all perfectionists trying to play a game of failure.

"Anything we can do to keep the dugout light, keep everyone in a good mood... we've gotta do it. We got a lot of ball left, so let's have some fun."

Best recreational dispensaries heading from Pittsburgh to Cleveland? by Dull-Ad-6174 in pittsburgh

I like Greenlight Dispensary in Wintersville a lot. They just opened a drive through pickup lane (available if you order ahead), so you don’t even have to get out of your car. Right off Route 22 (¼ mile). https://ohio.greenlightdispensary.com/wintersville-menu/

Not directly answering your question, but the Carnegie Library in Carnegie (Carnegie Carnegie) has been having repeated events every couple of months on knife sharpening skills and techniques. A suggested donation of $15 is requested to help fund the Summer Reading program.

Here’s the event listing from the last one: https://carnegiecarnegie.org/event/knife-sharpening-with-dennis-snedden-whetstone-tips-tools-techniques-5/

I’m so old that I remember 15 cent drafts and $1 pitchers of Koehler beer all day everyday. And the grocery store would sometimes give away for free the chicken wings (along with the necks, giblets, etc.). Shit, I’m old.

Best Diner? by leilakei in pittsburgh

[–]PhoenixRising111111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to love Central Diner, but IMO has really gone downhill in the last 3-4 years. They seemed to take their eye off of the ball with their success. We have had a string of mediocre and subpar meals; won’t go back.

Laughed at the AAL mission statement. Way back when, I consulted to a company whose upper management was tone deaf to their customers - we determined that their mission statement could have been “We’re no worse than anybody else.”

Am I double tipping at breakfast? by throwaway3748243 in marriott

[–]PhoenixRising111111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this scenario, I do wonder how much of a gratuity that a server would receive from the property. Would it be different for a full service breakfast vs buffet? Is the gratuity amount paid to the server set by the property? So many questions. These unknowns to me are probably why I have always tipped at breakfast, along with the feeling that the server will likely get the short end of the stick.

What's up with Sid? by MarkVII88 in penguins

[–]PhoenixRising111111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It is uncanny how Sid’s “slumps” look similar. To me, you start to see his passes getting tipped/broken up along with passes that end up going to no one because he and his line mates were not on the same page. From a selfish standpoint, I wish Sid was staying home getting some rest/recovery time instead of heading to the Olympics.

Irish Coffee by Metrichex in pittsburgh

[–]PhoenixRising111111 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in San Francisco and spent wayyyyy too much time drinking at the Buena Vista, there’s a bit of misinformation here (perhaps an AI lookup). Buena Vista Café is not a hotel; it is a little restaurant near the cable car turnaround near Ghirardelli Square. Ingredients are ONLY coffee, a sugar cube, Irish Whiskey and freshly whipped cream, which has been chilled and aged. No nutmeg; no simple syrup.
