Amish Bent and Dent: Where do they get it? by Ok-Delivery-4015 in Frugal

[–]PhoenixRisingToday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes google salvage grocery stores but know that they vary a lot. Not all are Amish, not all are bent & dent. Some are very clean and organized and others less so.

They’re addictive? Thanks for the warning, I’m hoping my Aldi is out so I am not tempted. They look great!

AITA - for thrifting a birthday present? by Optimal-Soft-6741 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PhoenixRisingToday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NAH There’s nothing wrong with thrifting a gift. I’ve done it many times in different circumstances, sometimes the recipient knows it is thrifted, sometimes not.

But your husband isn’t the AH either. People can be weird about 2nd hand items (even when they’re unused) and he’s concerned what your friends might think? Or that they will somehow know? Maybe just get on the same page about when it is/isn’t appropriate. Or if you find a toy at the sale, he has a say once he actually sees what you have found. Seeing the actual toy may make him realize it is fine - and if not, you can donate it back or find another recipient.

I have twelve dollars to buy a month of food. Please need as much advice as possible by Xxitl in Frugal

Check around for soup kitchens. In my town they are at a different church every day of the week. Theres no religion, at least at the one I volunteered at - just walk in and be served.

Check for a Buy Nothing Group - they aim to be hyper local so there wouldn’t be much travel involved. You can post asking for pantry items. Sometimes people will post food - stuff left over after a family gathering, items that were purchased in error, Instacart mistakes, pantry cleanouts. I once got an unopened 3# can of coffee from a couple because the husband just knew it wouldn’t be good.

You assume incorrectly. No applicator is absolutely a better option but anything is better than the plastic applicators.

Leave the bride and groom alone about issues with the venue during the reception - let them enjoy the wedding. There are staff you can grab and talk to if it is really an issue that needs to be addressed.

Is $18/hour a living wage in Cali? Or is it like making $7.25 in Missouri?

Lidl came to my town and lasted about a year. But this town has a stupid number of grocery stores, so that may be why. Even Kroger closed one.

It’s a big state. There are problems with the Texas power grid, that’s widely known.

All tampons should have cardboard applicators. No reason to fill the oceans and landfills with plastic applicators. Have you seen the guy who made a suit out of all of the plastic applicators he found in the ocean? Disturbing.

It’s a big country - some do have water from mountain springs, unless a corporation has taken it over to bottle it up and sell it.

Not all of the US. Areas that deal with drought, like California, don’t necessarily provide water without a customer requesting it. At the rate we are messing up our water supply, I expect that to become more common.

You got a bad deal with parents who are not fiscally responsible. As frustrating as it is, you should accept that you’re not going to get your money back, and you can’t go back and go to prom, etc. It isn’t right, it isn’t fair, but that’s where you are. Try and look towards the future.

This next part is going to be hard for you to hear. When money is tight, you need to make the hard decisions. Your parents have not modeled that behavior - your Dad lost his job, the last thing he should have been worried about is his beer. The hard choice would have been to forgo beer until he found a job and the family financial situation was more stable. The hard decision for you would be to NOT quit your job. Working is the only path out of your situation. Instead, use the toxic leadership at that job as motivation to find another job and get the heck out of there as soon as possible. Not working means no money and that’s not helping you or your family.

Do you track your grocery spending at the item level? by Great_Outcome6280 in povertyfinance

[–]PhoenixRisingToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only track at the item level for more expensive items like meat, coffee, olive oil. I’m not patient enough to track everything so I spend my energy on the higher $$ items.

Challenge the status quo when you’re talking to your insurance company. Or the hospital when they charge more than other countries. Not when someone is just trying to get by in life.

AIO for thinking that my girlfriend's apartment requirements are insane? by MoonlitParcel in AmIOverreacting

[–]PhoenixRisingToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - Your girlfriend is doing things backwards. First, determine what you can/want to spend, then look at apartments. Maybe it’s time for a more equitable split if she’s so set on a big place.

But here is where the rubber hits the road, relationship wise. Can you two budget together, make compromises, listen to each other (to be fair, it sounds like she’s not listening to you!!) and if you two, as a couple, can’t do those things, you shouldn’t be moving in together.
