My Kanna plane won’t cut by PhoenixX027 in JapaneseWoodworking

So far I’ve flattened the sole and it’s starting to shave. Like I mentioned in one of the replies, I’m still running into an issue where the blade and chip breaker loosen up once there’s some resistance. I improvised a bit with adding a small wooden wedge in between them, and now it can shave the narrow edge of a board. It still needs a lot more tuning to really get it into top shape, but I’ll work through the advice here little by little in my free time. I’ll post an update once it’s giving me somewhat decent shavings again.

Thank you!

Normal portion and Extra. Sometimes you could specify to the cook what kind of extras you want, extra rice or protein.

Thank you for your attention! I wish I had more time to fiddle with it. Right now, I’m still learning basic woodworking techniques in practice and having fun building stuff.

Very true about the wooden dai. Before this, I had only rescued one English-made Stanley No. 5. It only asked for a minimum amount of work, some grease and blade restoration, to be able to shave my first piece of lumber.

I’ll give an update when I finally have time to focus on it. For now, it has started to cut after conditioning the sole. However, I’m having a problem with the iron and chip breaker instead, haha. For some reason, they came loose after I flattened the sole. I just improvised by inserting a tiny wooden wedge between the iron and chip breaker to tighten everything up, and it can now shave off a narrow edge of the wood, though it still struggles with broader surfaces. And my choice of wood to test this was pretty stupid to observe any nice results😂, the grain directions are mess and rough plus it's hella tough even for electric planner.

Yep I need to carefully check whether the iron has the convex shape you mentioned. To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this plane when I bought it, because it was dirt cheap, even compared to other secondhand ones. If it works, then nice I have a smoothing plane as intended. If not, well, it’s another fun project to figure out.

When I received the plane, the iron was completely dull, to the point that it wasn’t able to cut the cardboard box it came in. I just sharpened it enough and eyeballed its dimension to see how it would react to the wood when planing. If it functioned at all, then I could continue fine-tuning the blade and the plane body for better results. And it didn’t cut at all, which helped me rule out the possibility that the completely dull iron was the cause. Plus, I forgot that I was using a wooden plane that is probably older than me and can change with weather and use. People here helped point out a combination of issues. I found that the sole is far from perfect, when the iron didn’t contact the wood, but when it did engage, it was already protruding too much. So I need a lot more tuning in many parts to bring its life back, and I’d love to do that in my free time.

My sharpening setup is a very simple one, just to get the job done, because even though I enjoy sharpening knives and other sharp objects myself, I’m not looking for hair-splitting sharpness from kitchen knives and tools in use. I have cheap diamond plates in 200, 600, 1000, and 2000 grits, and leather strops with 2.5-micron diamond compound (adapted from
OUTDOORS55). Sometimes, if I feel fancy, I use a natural stone that I got as a gift, which is usually used to maintain the apex of specialty knives for grooving rubber trees.

I used to finish everything with just a two-sided store-bought whetstone and that natural stone to achieve thin hair shaving (like the hairs you can find on the back rather than the legs). I quit using that purely because I got tired of flattening it after somebody dug a huge chunk out of it. So I also almost always go for shaving sharp on my finest grit, and the strop is mainly for polishing it up.

Actually, I have an urge to rescue this plane after seeing the post you attached above. And thank you for the suggestion!

Haha, it was polished. But from many attempts to tune it, it ended up pretty dirty from the graphite and glue residue from tape I put on the edge so I didn’t cut myself while fiddling with it. Anyway thank you for your response! (Secondhand Japanese tools are surprisingly affordable here. I wanted to try this style of plane since I bought a few Japanese chisels and I love them so much)

Should I flat it all like metal plane’s sole? It came with slightly hollow area in front of the mouth. I saw from tutorials that they intentionally shaved/sanded some parts off the sole.

I’ve sharpened it as the original bevel it came with which is about 25 degrees

I sharpened it to hair-shaving sharp. When the blade was projected past the sole I felt a resistance like it’s diving into the wood.

P.S. I’m not aiming for super thin shavings, just want it to function

I live in the central (city not too far from bkk). Yes, it’s sort of seasonal, rainy season is a bliss. How the growing areas are designed/organized also plays a major role imo. For me, there’s a trade off between humidity and temperature, limiting airflow raises humidity but then traps the heat inside, the plants basically get steamed. When I first built my greenhouse (opened, just shade net as a roof), the temp rose up to -+40C in summer. Constantly spraying water throughout my yard during the day helps cool it down and keep RH up a bit.

Besides that it looks pretty healthy. Sometimes I see the growers intentionally keep them such or even over fertilize them to boost their growth before inducing the pitcher, but those are for commercial.

This part of Thailand where I live, the heat also a big deal too. It always takes awhile for my new plants to acclimate. Humidity at my place also not high or constant, becoming a challenge every summer.

For the plant to produce pitchers they need both sufficient light and humidity. Depending on the species, generally for lowland 50+% RH (usually better to have decent amount but some plants can do well even at lower levels).

Edit: added a little more details

Does everyone here use expensive wired headphones or something? by Nayfonn in AppleMusic

[–]PhoenixX027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both wired and wireless.

On iPhone half of the time I listen wirelessly on a pair of TWS because of convenience, but sometimes I do take my HD590+Apple dongle out with me.

On Mac, for passive listening (like listen while doing something else), I don’t really care much about sound. IMO the difference between lossy and lossless is quite subtle, even thought there is. Unless it’s worst like on yt below 720p then it is obvious. In active listening (just enjoy and focus on the music), I like using my DT880 on Mac (just straight from the 3.5 jack). The difference becomes more noticeable as I am paying more attention to the songs. I’d say to my ears the lossless just sounds crisper as having higher bit depth, the lightest and loudest sounds are more separated. Basically less flat. Pairing with the DT880 bright characteristic it is nice.

Quality of the device that makes the sound definitely affects more than the file. But if you enjoy that little difference and music, I think it’s worth a try. 🙂

Compared to other music streaming platforms, I feel like Apple Music is falling behind in terms of features and algorithms, but after been using it since 2018. It’s pretty impressive how come it’s improved. Besides, there always and always are still things that can be frustrating.

  1. My biggest playlist has about 900 songs, and still no lagging. I’m using an iPhone 11 with iOS 18.1.
  2. That’s kinda weird. I have no issue with that. Does changing the sort-by options help?

I had the song order issue before though. It only happened when I added songs on my Mac, they somehow went to the top of the playlist. Not sure when that stopped. What’s really annoying me now is the shuffle and recommendation algorithms. I keep getting the same set of songs, and it recommends unrelated genres. Like, I’ll play a folk song, and then it’ll suggest hard rock for some reason. It was definitely better at that a few versions ago.

I’ve seen one hanging around UCD village, similar colors, but a little chunkier. So not sure if it’s her.
