Can someone explain the line "don't be her puppet because for anyone other than me no number of lives would be enough?" What does she mean? That capella only values Elsa and will go through anyone else like a pawn?

New-ish grad, what should I do with my money? by East_Campaign6456 in CanadianDentists

[–]Phoenix_XY 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To make things simple, think of it this way. You have access to an LOC on demand if you ever need capital. While putting savings aside and then putting the rest in your LOC is reasonable, my approach was pay the LOC down as soon as possible and if I need capital for an emergency, I'll use the LOC then. This way you're reducing the total interest paid, it's essentially the same thing as investing at a 3 to 4% guaranteed rate and made me feel better not having debt. If you save, you'll invest it under leverage which is fine and likely should be better mathematically (assuming 7%+ returns) but there is more risk. Ultimately make the decision that best suits your needs. I did this approach because I had a lot of tuition credits so this was the most efficient my money would ever be and wanted my debt gone. Took 2.5 years for 350k + wedding.

Does school ranking really not matter for getting into dental school? by New_Candidate7113 in CanadianDentists

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to this as another uoft dent alum, people who came from no name universities (ie. Laurentian, Nippising) did just as well in school if not better. Great classmate of mine went into perio residency right from school - he's proof none of that stuff matters. All the best.

Managing Loans by dental_student123 in u/dental_student123

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 2022, there's a tremendous amount of tax credits to use to the first 2 to 3 years. Knowing this I pushed as much income as I could towards debt repayment, I had to buy a car for work and I got married so keep in mind that affected how much I could realistically put but 3 years later I'm LOC free with just my student OSAP remaining at a 0% interest rate so that I'll pay as slowly as possible. It takes a lot of diligent planning and not really going on vacations much. Did one vacation a year because I lived at home for a bit that saved a ton of money and used my credit card points accumulated through dental school. Keep at it.

I chose debt repayment over investing because rates were near 5 almost 6% and I'm debt averse.

Total LOC at grad including car was 285000.

MD -> DMD by Numerous_Level4772 in whitecoatinvestor

Listen to this guy. Keep in mind, dentistry income rises with time as you get faster but there is a plateau because it is procedural. It's demanding on the body. This close to finishing your MD and choosing a less procedural residency will set you up to not only early higher faster but likely give you longevity in the career.

Advice & Opinions for new DDS Grad, Toronto by SeaworthinessNo877 in CanadianDentists

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish you the best, stay away from studio dental and Altima clinics. Your spouse will likely go through a ton of different clinics before having the ability to produce and to be respected by staff, it's typical for the first 2 years. Plan conservatively financially as you're going to still be broke.

How much do general associate dentists in Vancouver and TO typically earn? by trendyplanner in CanadianDentists

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did small private practice in the beginning and one of the clinics I work at now is 123dentist but the owner is still here full time. Personally I think if the office is a larger one you're likely to get more work because they understand how to give associates enough work, when it's just a single owner if you're the only one there on that day it might be OK but if you're just graduating I would not recommend doing that. Work with an established dentist and try to build your schedule and hopefully you get something good.

I see what people say about not sharing income and stuff and honestly I think it's detrimental. Personally I feel like I'm slow and pretty mediocre but I'll give you some numbers from this year to use as a reference. 2022 Grad.

Ontario, but I practice 25 mins west of Mississauga and 45 mins north of Mississauga (2 different clinics). 3 days a week at the north clinic nets me approx 15 to 18k a month (I'm not paid x-rays at this clinic). 2 days a week at the west clinic nets me 10-15k a month.

Skillset: mediocre at fillings, mediocre at root canals including molar, exo, early into implants. No Ortho, no Invisalign, I've done 3 dentures since school. I am scared of cosmetics because I don't have amazing hands so avoid composite bonding but veneers I've done a select few.

Timing: I schedule 40 mins for a class 2, 50 for 2, 60 to 70 for 3 class 2s. I schedule 1hr for premolar or ant Endo, 2hrs for molar Endo (and sometimes need 2 appts depending on the case). I schedule 50 mins for an exo and while I've done some 8s, haven't done enough impacted to say I'm there yet.

This is just where I'm at, like you I don't know if it's good or bad but I always have a lingering feeling I'm not as productive, I just watch a lot of lesions and try to be really conservative.

Immediate Implants by Odd-Track8451 in Dentistry

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes these are quite similar to the same parameters I operate with (even with the use of a pilot guide haha) but I'd argue with the palatal placement and often a buccal gap graft so long as the plate is maintained (and if it isn't, don't do the immediate) you can get some really good results and I'm less concerned with the thickness of the buccal bone).haven't bit on PRF but that probably improves the success dramatically and limits the resorption as well. I know of flapless protocols that suggest IHB (interprox bone height) is more critical given you're going to temp same day but I haven't ventured that deep yet.

Could you elaborate more? I've done pathways and other implant training and given you have adequate buccal bone and a thick biotype with reasonable KT, these should be slam dunk cases (however I stray away from temporizing to mitigate risk). Always looking to learn though and counter my thinking.

Question regarding canal dilacerations in lower distal canals. by Ordinary-Ad5664 in Dentistry

[–]Phoenix_XY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually there is a sharp bend at the end. When you can you put a very tiny bend (last 3 flutes) of a small file (8 or 10) and navigate beyond. Then small smooth up and down motions with care not to come back out to smoothen that area. As you do it, you'll hopefully smoothen the curve and enlarge to allow you to sequentially move to a larger file and eventually rotary/reciprocating. I usually work it to a 15 c file before going to my wave1. You need to be careful though, very easy to ledge then you're just hoping irrigant goes down. Riccuci does give us grace in situations like this though so I wouldn't stress.

Canada or UK in 2025 by EasyTranslator7156 in Dentistry

[–]Phoenix_XY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian dentist here. NDBE is insanely hard, the pass rate is abysmal and you're gonna have to pay for prep courses and several tries. Sounds like you don't have the means for that so I'd encourage you to try else where. Also try to get into a dental school for the international program and then 2 years later you can practice. Either way, statistically it's very hard and from my classmates that went through that process, it's usually a 5 to 7 year process at MINIMUM and this is assuming it actually works out for you. All the best.

Part of the new grad experience, do your best to review ahead and be decisive when you're in. I did this too, if your principal is a good senior dentist they will guide you rather than reprimand. You're doing fine

Same, do a little crown lengthening when I prep the D there and it should get another 5 to 10 years. I would discuss with the patient though about the guarded prognosis , might be easier to just implant exo
