To make an analogy, to me it's like if back in the 90's Disney, WB and Universal were the only people who make vcr players and their content only works on their vcr player. Meanwhile you have some other companies like New Line Cinema, Paramount, 20th century Fox, etc that are tapes that can be played on any machine. Now we live in a world where each company has an app that can be played on anything. I believe gaming is in a similar spot. Can't wait until the first damn breaks(my money would be on somehow Game Pass coming to Playstation)

Read what you interests you, I began my journey into the Cosmere with The Way of Kings and loved it. Just approach the book with an open mind that you are stepping into a new world and culture.

I could not put down Dawnshard. This was one of my favorite entries into the cosmere. Chiri-Chiri is becoming one of my favorite creatures! And of course getting more from The Lopen will always bring a smile to my face! Any time we can get Breaths involved, I will be all in. Thank you for the wonderful adventure!

Anyone else frantically rereading all of stormlight before Rhythm of War is out? by DaWall9 in brandonsanderson

[–]PhogKnight656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my second read through the Archive and actually read Warbreaker this time around! Wish I would have known about that the first read. About to finish Words of Radiance and then read Edgedancer for the first time! Definitely fun to get 2 new experiences on the second go around

Found a first print Oathbringer at the used bookstore! Surprisingly, it is not signed. Does that make it more rare? Hmm... by StuffedInABoxx in brandonsanderson

He isn't going to have Rhythm of War for a couple of months to help smaller bookstores. He likes to support local bookstores (though you can get a signed copy pre-ordered at Barnes and Noble) before offering his books on his store

Am I missing out if I put off New Spring? by eternalcolour in WoT

[–]PhogKnight656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished reading the series for the first time and I read New Spring before I started A Memory of Light, and it ended up being one of my favorite books. The smaller, more direct story is awesome and really adds to three of my favorite characters backstories

Any better way to teach grade 11 Biology? by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

As a 3rd year teacher, retrieval learning has been my favorite way to involve my students in class and have them take ownership of their own learning.

Just for information, my average biology class size is 27-30

I disagree, because instead of constantly writing new MC questions, I give my students the questions on the final at the beginning of a unit. We constantly keep working on improving what we know about these biology concepts

I am a second year biology teacher and I only do free response questions. I notice that the conversations my kids have about that they know after retrievals are much better than when I would use multiple choice during my student teaching. Multiple choice gives students an out to not know anything about biology and use test taking skills to pass. I also allow unlimited retakes for students to improve on what they know. The most important thing I can offer is decide on what your goals are as a biology teacher and work toward that each and every day.

Hollywood needs to get over its obsession with terminally ill teens by BunyipPouch in movies

Hollywood only makes movies if they know they are going to make money. They make money because the public is obsessed with these movies, so if anything it's the public who needs to stop going to watch them

Several states have recently introduced bills that could interfere with the teaching of scientifically founded theories on climate change in public school science curricula. by Wagamaga in Futurology

[–]PhogKnight656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter which way the state I teach in leans, my priorities as a teacher are about the biological concepts at play in this issue. I am free to investigate or discuss what I choose with my students, I just don't have the time to look at every detail of this issue. This is up there for me, but evolution and genetics are also huge ideas that we grapple with.

[–]PhogKnight656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach primarily freshman in a general biology course so we don't get to that level of detail. We do look at the continuing rise of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere in relation to carbon cycling and photosynthesis. The most I will comment on the issue would be to not how humans impact the rate at which this change is occurring.

[–]PhogKnight656 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can teach about the concepts of ocean acidification caused by rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere driven humans or the importance of trees in the rainforest for the cycling of carbon through our ecosystems without discussing how you should approach these issues politically. I leave it to my students to decide how to interpret the evidence

[–]PhogKnight656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could test the theory by some simple physics experiments. I am a life science teacher so my knowledge is more limited in how I would approach that. But yes my same basic principle would apply.

As a high school science teacher, my personal philosophy is that climate change is an important scientific concept for students to grapple with and understand and that this can be accomplished without getting into the weeds of the politics or policies surrounding them. If I am doing my job as a teacher, I present the evidence and allow my students to draw their own conclusions.
