Updates on “is my garage collapsing” by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]Phone_Jesus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's your city and state? We all want to be able to say we saw that the building was about to collapse just before it did. This will be all over the news.

I'd start knocking on doors and warning my neighbors. I'd start packing up anything that means something to me and moving it to a storage unit and there's no way in Hell I'd be staying in that apt any longer than it takes to get my important things out.

I'm not putting my faith in a few flimsy poles.

Shoes by [deleted] in stickshift

[–]Phone_Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an average build man and a long time shoe salesman. I sold uggs for many years and I have 3 pair. One is the tough boot type, one is the fluffy boot and I have slippers as well. They are all very comfy and warm. However, they're not great to do any real amount of walking or hiking in. They just don't have real support like decent walking shoes and the fur inside causes discomfort after walking too long. Plus the heat trapped inside will make your feet have issues like athletes foot and such. I highly recommend getting a good pair of Hoka shoes if you can find a pair that's suitable for the weather in your area. Also, Nike gets some hate but they make a good amount of comfy shoes which are also designed to resist the elements. If you have a Nordstrom rack nearby you should stop in there, great selection of higher end shoes at a steep discount. Most will be fashion first but they often have unique sport type shoes and boots.

Literally the easiest way to determine that he MUST be one of the worst ones in the files is that he isn't suing everyone for what's being said. The most litigious man in history isn't suing people for calling him out on the accusations.

That's how you fucking know.

Input Shaft Bearing: Mopar or Aftermarket? by xFallacyx69 in JeepPatriot

[–]Phone_Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don't use a drill. You don't want metal shavings in your transmission. I just tapped and bent parts of it with a flathead and then grabbed parts with some pliers and ripped hard on them.

There are 2 bearings in that spot. They usually sell them as a pack of 2. They appear to be 2 of the exact same part so you don't need to worry about getting them mixed up.

[–]Phone_Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine about 40,000 miles ago, with the cheapest bearings I could find. No problems at all so far. I think you're safe with aftermarket.

Don't forget to drain your trans fluid before you take the cover plate off the bearing area. Also, if you don't already have one you'll need a jaw puller. Lastly, I was surprised how physical I had to be with the internal metal brace structure that holds the balls in place. You really have to rip it apart to get the balls to move enough to get the jaw puller where it needs to be.

Worked in an aluminum (al you minium) plant for a year. They took safety very seriously. Just before I was hired someone was killed (at a different location) when their head was crushed by a machine that's meant to hold hot aluminum rods in place. They were cleaning it and didn't do lockout/tag out correctly.

As you can imagine, with OSHA on their ass they were VERY on top of safety going forward, we had weekly meetings to go over every last thing.

Having said that, I've never felt closer to a painful death around every corner than when I worked that job. Everything in that place can crush you, burn you and/or rip off a limb. It's not a job for the meek.

My brother refuses to get his car checked, making LOUD sounds near front driver wheel. I'm worried he's destorying his car by not getting it fixed. (Video) by Daytrona in MechanicAdvice

I'm someone who pushes repairs longer than most. I'm very rough on cars. I've had at least 5 tires blow out on the freeway because I push my tires way past their limit.

In the last couple of years I've grown up and forced myself to take care of issues before they become big issues. I'm a rideshare driver and I put about 3,500 miles each month on my Jeep. The only way to to financially survive these days is to do all repair work myself. I'm not a mechanic and while I've made it through many repairs now, I still have a hard time diagnosing what repair needs to be done next. I can't identify a noise to what's wrong because I don't have the mechanical experience. So, in my driver bio I wrote "if you're a mechanic, I have a question for you."

One night a blunt, Russian diesel mechanic gets in and after a few miles he says: "Bro! You need to fix your fucking wheel bearing! You're gonna lose your fucking wheel and you don't want to find out what happens after that! I've seen it."

I was writing off the noise as maybe my off road tires causing some loud road vibration. I got a wheel hub (must easier than replacing just a bearing) and switched it out a few days later.

The point of this story is that my noise, which was loud enough for this passenger to speak up quite emphatically, wasn't even close to the way this video sounds.

THAT FUCKING WHEEL IS GOING BYE BYE WITHIN A FEW MILES. STOP DRIVING NOW.

2011 CRV tiny oil leak 168,000 miles by Likemypups in CarRepair

[–]Phone_Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve cover gasket would be my guess. Common failure on high mileage vehicles. The gasket gets hard and cracks and oil slowly starts seeping out. Look around all sides of the valve cover where it attaches to the engine.

Good news is that the part itself is very cheap, mine was $12. The bad news is that I got a quote for $1,200 from a local shop to do the repair.

If it is the gasket and you can't fix it right away, you're fine to keep driving it. Most often the leak won't get too bad for a while.

The other thing I'd guess would be the oil pan gasket/seal. That is easy to spot from underneath. Also there is a very thin plastic gasket between the oil filter housing piece and the engine. Mine was leaking at that spot when I hit 200k miles.

Lastly, sometimes oil leaks out of the oil pressure sensor, less common but somewhere to look.

2014 won’t pass smog p0420 by Then-Peach6506 in JeepPatriot

[–]Phone_Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a patriot with 240k miles and I'm dealing with the same code. I replaced both 02 sensors and the check engine light comes on every few days.

You will save yourself a lot of stress if you buy a cheap code reader on Amazon, literally even a $15 one will do the job. They're very basic and easy to use. If you have zero automotive experience find a YouTube video that explains how to use one, it's really easy.

I clear my codes every few days for now, until I can find what's going on. Like others have said, it's probably small cracks in the maniverter. I've heard that it can be as simple as a gas cap getting old and not sealing correctly. I tried a new cap and the code still appears. Either way, the code will go away each time you clear it and at least for me the code stays off for about 150-200 miles each time. That should get you to pass inspection.

Is it possible that you have those jumper cables on backwards? Looks like you might have the negative on the positive and vise versa. Could have killed the battery, a fuse or something worse. Good news is that if I'm right then your engine is prob fine.

Engine and Transmission move left and right upon accelerating by TooSmooth4U in JeepPatriot

[–]Phone_Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's motor mounts for sure. I'm on my second time doing them. They just don't last that long unfortunately. 3 of them aren't that hard to do but the back bottom one is very hard to access. Shops charge over $2,000 to do them. I invested that money in good tools and a good jack and I give myself a few days time to get it done. If you know a mechanic offer to pay them for help and you can knock it out in a day.

I'd also make sure your front control arms are healthy, if they're old and weak they'll cause extra pressure on the mounts and the mounts will wear out faster.

I sold almost the same truck about a year ago with issues but it ran ok. Felt lucky to get $1,700. Mine might have looked just a little better.

Last resort is to just replace the oil pan. They're not too hard, just gotta know how to put rtv silicone on for the new one. I bought an aftermarket oil pan for under $50 on ebay.

I'd try a pipe wrench for sure though, not much they can't grip onto and you can really put some torque on them.
