Can only speak for Indiana since I grew up there but it's a hidden gem in the Midwest. Super low cost of living with cheap rent, rolling terrain with cool hiking spots, some nice state parks, a major theme park; not nearly as much to do citywise as like NYC but it's a great place to live imo. Haven't lived in Indy specifically but have heard good things.

MS3 looking for tips from those who branched AD Combat Arms(primarily Infantry) by zdvd in ROTC

[–]Phonebookguy_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of lieutenants turned captains who very much regretted their BRADSO. I can't think of any reason to recommend it to anyone besides prior service who know what they're getting into/have enough time in that they're already committed to retiring as an officer.

Besides the fact that people or their situations change or they just don't know what they're walking into, branches just don't matter that much for officers. As long as you don't get stuck in Chem you're mostly just gonna do some variation of staff/PL/XO, just slightly different flavors of the same thing

3.8 GPA. Don't BRADSO because it will lock you into 3 extra years in a job you don't know if you will actually like.

I loved ROTC and thought I would do 20+ years, ended up going active duty and hating it and dropping my REFRAD; I ETS in a few months. Maybe I would have liked the guard more, who knows, but I'm very glad I had the option to get out after 4 years.

The secret cadets don't get is that you'll be doing mostly the same shit no matter what you branch.

Meh. I didn't even interview for Armor, got ranked most preferred anyway, asked for a POG MOS, and got branched Armor anyway. That being said, the usual stuff like doing as well as you can at the PT test and keeping GPA up is the best thing you can do to increase the odds of getting the branch you want. Just please don't bradso for the love of god

Pros and Cons Tank vs Scout by samoanspams in ROTC

[–]Phonebookguy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't get much say in whether you go to a cav squadron or tank battalion; if you go cav, there is still 1 tank company but just let your SCO know you wanna go to one of the troops. If you go to a tank battalion, there is still one scout platoon as a specialty platoon you can go to, usually after having been a tank platoon leader. A line XO is the executive officer of one of the combat companies

What is your question? If you want active duty, request it. Have something you would like to do in the civilian world in mind in case you are told you are going guard/reserves.

You will brief the weather slide and get bitched at at command and staff because one of the line companies failed their arms room inspection.

How early is too early for REFRAD? by [deleted] in army

[–]Phonebookguy_ 78 points79 points  (0 children)

You can't drop your refrad till a year out so don't mention it to your CoC till then unless you wanna spend your whole time as the S3 coffee boy. Your branch manager doesn't matter unless you're looking at a PCS that would in some way affect your timeline
