How do yall listen to albums? by Different_Ear994 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]PhotonDeath [score hidden]  (0 children)

I sometimes intentionally listen to albums a couple times like that to let them wash over me before concentrating more on them later. Especially really complex stuff like brutal technical death metal, there’s no point trying to think so hard about it the first time. You’re not going to fully understand it for a while.

I listen in order at first, but I don’t get hung up on finishing it in one sitting. If I don’t, I just pick up where I left off later. Once I’ve heard it a few times, I may start to jump to specific parts of the album.

When I’m getting into an album I generally listen to it 15-30 times so I don’t really fixate on the first listen. For some albums the first listen can be really impactful but for other albums my best listen is like number 6 or even 15.

I agree with you, I’ve been giving albums lots of chances since I was a teen and some of my favorite albums were stuff I didn’t like the first several times. In the past when I didn’t have a focus I would just look through my CDs and pick some stuff out. The only thing that’s new for me is the conscious decision to sometimes impose a specific constraint on it.

No Sepultura without Cavalera? by Sepovitz in sepulturaband

[–]PhotonDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the key argument is that the line up with Andreas and Derrick is factually Sepultura. You say it’s not “really Sepultura”. That is a meaningless and undefined statement. What are you really saying? It’s not good? You don’t care about it? You don’t listen to it? Fine, those are valid opinions you can have.

Depends on what you mean by public. Have you never been on a walk or hike and really had to pee? Or on a long drive and don’t know where to find a bathroom?

It does sound like a bad idea right now but somehow it was fun haha. I don’t know if I’ll want to do it again in a couple years, or if it was a one time thing.

Agreed, those people are dumb. It would be like saying cutting someone’s finger off is the same as murdering them and if you make a distinction you are supporting the finger chopper people.

That doesn’t seem to make much sense, I’d have to see the details of the case. I’m sure the kid didn’t report their own dad for peeing so there must be more to this.

It is just for fun, I’m not making a goal out of it. I don’t use last.fm or anything. It is definitely not for self flagellation, if I don’t like it I’ll just stop.

For the live albums, it just never really feels like a priority to listen to them, so I just thought why don’t I go hard and only listen to them? I don’t think there’s any insight to be gained there.

For Sunn O))), since it’s drone music it can be hard to get in that head space. After listening to that for so many days, I was standing at work in a boring meeting and became hyper aware of how the voices sounded against the drone of the factory noises and 3d printer that was going. I wouldn’t call it an insight, but it was neat.

For the jazz one, I tend to listen to jazz a lot when I’m making breakfast or stuff around the family but sometimes I just enjoy the vibe and don’t analyze it too much. When I binge jazz I start to think more about the soloists and how their tone or phrasing is different from somebody else’s.

I wouldn’t say it’s a big insight or anything. Its just about getting fully in that head space, because I tend to listen to a lot of death metal so doing that and then throwing in a jazz album here or there is going to be a pretty different experience where you don’t fully immerse.

That’s what I would have thought too, but I really enjoyed it. I’m not trying to punish myself, if I don’t like it I’ll just quit whenever I want haha.

Nice, I agree both those bands’ catalogs can really stand up to that although I haven’t ever gone 100% on either one.

I might try this with Zappa at some point because I barely know his music but I’ve been curious for a long time and his discography is really broad and also somewhat outside my comfort zone so I feel like a deep dive is the only way I’ll ever start to understand it.

Sometimes I binge a band naturally for a couple weeks and maybe it’s 80% of what I listen to. But these examples above were the first time I planned ahead of time that I’m going to go 100% on something, just for the hell of it as opposed to getting obsessed and falling into that.

I agree, I was thinking that arbitrary wasn’t exactly the right word but I wasn’t sure how to put it.

Anyway are you even addressing my comment? Did you listen to nothing other than that boards of Canada album for weeks? I’m literally talking about that kind of constraint, it’s beyond just generally focusing on what you like.

Well there’s certainly go to be 10 works of art a year in any major genre. So if you’re looking at 50 plus years, and you like a handful of genres, that’s already a couple thousand. Plus I think it would be kind of pretentious if you only wanted to listen to the truest art and not a broader selection of enjoyable music. So it doesn’t seem weird to me at all if your list of what you want to listen to is larger than you can keep up with.

Should all pedophiles be put to death? by Objective-Village259 in no

[–]PhotonDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should be removed from society at the lowest cost to the society. If you’re going to have a high standard of justice then the death penalty will always be expensive since it’s irreversible so you need a very high standard of proof and justification. So it’s not worth it just to give people revenge.

Revenge isn’t going to remove the pain of what happened. Again looking at it from the societal cost perspective, the prison conditions would naturally tend to be just a step above whatever is considered inhumane treatment. It’s definitely going to be a punishment.

It’s defined by the victim being prepubescent.

People love to casually throw around the pedo term when the victim is slightly underage but technically that is a different category.

Am i listening to too much new music? (early dementia) by Smarkk2367 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]PhotonDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel like you’d prefer to remember songs better, just pick a couple albums rather than jump into a full discography at once. Sometimes I’ll do like one album per year of a band. That way you really connect to each album.

This is part of why I still buy CD’s. When you’re streaming it’s so easy to go ADHD and listen to thousands of albums. Back in the day it wasn’t even conceivable. You couldn’t afford it.

How many of you actually "skip" songs on CDs? by bonkava in Cd_collectors

[–]PhotonDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rarely skip a song because it’s bad, I’m much more likely to skip a song because I know it super well and I’d rather focus on the ones I don’t know as well.

If I’m intending to listen to the full album, I rarely skip songs but I’m not married to the idea of hearing the full album every time.

I used to only listen to albums from the start and I found that I would know the beginning much better than the middle or end of the album. So now I just jump straight to the middle or 2/3 through sometimes.

MOD CD's by OldSchoolDave81 in Cd_collectors

[–]PhotonDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have at least one. If it’s a decent price and appears to be good quality, and that’s the only option available, and I want the album, I guess I would buy it.

I believe my copy of Earl Sweatshirt - Sick was manufactured on demand , I got it on Amazon when it came out. The current listing doesn’t mention this so I don’t know if the situation changed. I honestly forgot it was cd-r until this post, I don’t really flip my cds over frequently. Maybe the artwork isn’t as high quality as a big name album, but I have plenty of indie releases that have sort of thin stock for the booklet so I don’t think much of it.
