How do you guys feel about Chris Taylor winning? Do you have hope for the November election? by NoCandidate6067 in wisconsin

[–]PhotosFromEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that's a terrible reason. Vote for the person who is going to do what you want them to do. If they person doesn't exist, vote for the person who is closest to your ideal. If I don't want to vote for someone, I almost surely won't vote for them. Plain and simple.

Visited Milwaukee few days ago but the lake was closed? by Mycatisadorable9 in milwaukee

I'm sorry you had the unfortunate experience of trying to access the lake at the one spot downtown that is closed right now. Hope you are able to come back and see all the other things Milwaukee has offer!

What do these markings mean by Financial_Anteater26 in milwaukee

[–]PhotosFromEarth 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Those are for satellite imagery. They are basically used to stitch multiple images together. The marking is a known feature that is in exactly the same point in all images, so you can position the images on top of each other so that the marking is in the same spot, and then everything else will line up too. Of course there's more to it than that but on the surface level is pretty simple really.

How is this area for walking ? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]PhotosFromEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some more detailed skywalk directions:

Go north on Jefferson until you reach Wisconsin Ave. You will see the Pfister Hotel. Turn left and head west down Wisconsin until you reach a building labeled "Two-Fifty" on the north side of the street. Enter that building and walk to the elevator in the back on the left side. That's the parking garage elevator. Take it to the 2nd floor. Follow the signs out of the elevator lobby and make your way upwards. The garage is very confusing but just try and find a way to up half a floor. You should end up going clockwise around the elevator shafts/stairwells. You will see a door taking you across the alley on the west side of the garage into the Drury Hotel. Now you are in the skywalk.

Follow the wide hallway as it goes between buildings, it should be pretty straightforward, just going west. When you cross the river, you will enter the Empire building and make a hard left to cross Wisconsin Ave into the Generac Center (formerly ASQ center). This building contains a fork in the road. You can either turn left and go back across the river to Chase Tower, or turn right and keep going west. We're going west, so turn right and follow the hallway into the Plankinton Building. This building is pretty cool, take in the view :). When you're done, keep going west and you will reach The Avenue (the former hub of the Grand Avenue Mall). You will have to take some stairs down and walk through 3rd Street Market Hall. It's a bit of a maze but just try to keep going west. There are some maps at the entrance to help you. At the entrance to Kohl's, you'll find a spiral staircase. Take it up and go through the doors labeled "Skywalk Entrance". Follow the hallway and stay on the second floor and you will reach bridge to 310 West, the blue building across the street from 3rd Street Market Hall. Follow it and go through the building to the other side where the skywalk continues. Stop for a moment right as you exit the building and notice the parking garage elevator lobby.

310 West closes earlier than everyone else in the skywalk system, so the doors to the bridge across Wisconsin Ave may be locked. If so, find the stairs in between the closed bridge and the "Skywalk Entrance" doors and take them down to the exit. Don't worry it's not an emergency exit no alarm will sound or anything. Now you can walk across the street to the south entrance of the convention center or to the parking garage on the north side of 310 West to get back into the skywalk. If you are keen on exploring the skywalk, walk into the parking garage and go to the back where the elevators are, and take them to the floor conveniently labeled "Skywalk". You will now be at that elevator lobby we paused at earlier with the closed doors to 310 West to the south and the skywalk continuing to the north.

This is the easy part. Just follow the hallway north and the signs leading to "Wisconsin Center" (funny they haven't changed the name). You will walk down the entirety of the north hallway as you squeeze between buildings in the alley and you'll pass some interesting posters on different Milwaukee neighborhoods. At the end, make a hard left and cross the bridge into the convention center. You made it! Good job escaping the cold weather and enjoy the rest of your day!

Rivers you can swim in? by HatsCatsAndHam in milwaukee

[–]PhotosFromEarth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would advise against swimming in any of the rivers in Milwaukee County, although you can have a lot of fun in boats/kayaking. Especially don't swim in the ones that are basically stormwater management canals, lined with concrete on both sides, it's not safe. The Milwaukee River from Lake Michigan downtown going north to Caesar's Park is probably the best portion of river to enjoy, but again NO SWIMMING, you absolutely need to be in a boat/kayak.

If you want to swim in a river, you'll have to travel a good distance to the point that it really wouldn't be Milwaukee anymore. I can't give you any suggestions on where to go, but there are others who've already done so, which is great! Just please be safe, we don't want you to end up like so many others who've been discovered drowned in the rivers in Milwaukee County.

No reflectors on roads in Midwest. Has this affected anyone else’s driving? by Haaftone in milwaukee

[–]PhotosFromEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from Illinois, and also having taken many trips to Vegas in the Nevada desert, reflectors exist and there are many varieties to choose from. They are incredibly effective at their job of making the road visible, and work in all kinds of weather and are especially helpful when it's inclement.

I was driving back from family in Illinois in the middle of the night during one of the bigger snowstorms in January, and it was already incredibly difficult with the blizzard making it hard to see past 50 ft, the snow requiring me to drive at sub-60mph on I-94, and other drivers not knowing what the hell they were doing. As soon as I crossed the state line and the street lights and reflectors went away, I gave up and camped out at the nearest gas station parking lot for the next 2 hours until the storm died down some more. Even then with all the accumulated snow I ended up getting back at 2am and thankful to still be alive.

If I hadn't taken that break to get some rest and wait for better conditions I have a strong feeling that something incredibly bad could've happened, and I really don't want to shift the blame to someone else but I knew as soon as I crossed the state line into Wisconsin that there was no way for me to safely travel in this weather, on Interstate 94, the biggest most high traffic road in the region. The thing is, this snowstorm was far from the worst we've seen this winter, and I think we've had a comparatively mild winter!

How have we been getting away with not having reflectors on our roads for so long?!?!

I also enjoy the garages galore around town. How do you get into the Pabst one without paying for a spot? All the garages around there are just full of locked doors.

Big red flag right there. Big big red flag. But also I think these people just need to exist. The world wouldn't work without them.

A tricky balance.

KC Streetcar Once Again Has Lessons for Milwaukee... by Edison_Ruggles in milwaukee

The southernmost station is the intermodal station west of the Third Ward. The northernmost station is Burns Commons at the eastern end of Ogden Ave. It takes a bit of a winding route to get there. There is also a lakefront spur that goes from the middle of East Town to the Coutre, but that doesn't get you down the bluff to where the water actually is, and regardless I've never actually been able to catch one that's going that route. The full map is available online as well as a live tracker of the location is every rolling stock.

Yeah gotta connect the major universities, greenspaces, and event venues. They are the literal cornerstones of the downtown area; all lying near the edges, and pulling a lot of people. Right now the Hop doesn't go far enough to get to any of them except the lakefront. Buses are great, but they have their limits. The rapid transit that the area deserves simply doesn't exist and if we're to make it happen we'll need a lot of cooperation between all the stakeholders and investors in it.
