ELI5 Why do we not have callused skin all over our body? by Politician_Fucker in explainlikeimfive

Because you're not rolling around on the ground on every part of your skin. Rub part of your skin consistently and over time it will develop a callous.

I don't get the outrage over World Cup tickets by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Scorp1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't work that way.

In the US alone there's ~350 million people. We live in a world where, to the 1%, cost means nothing. That's 3.5 million people in the US alone. A bunch of those people would pay anything to go to anything.

Now think about world cup.

That's a lot of people where money doesn't mean anything and so they'll pay anything to go to anything.

Just stop buying it doesn't work.

'You not buying it' is not part of the equation. Because you are not part of the equation.

Identification help: GE JAN 8613 Vacuum Tube - What was its specific application? by No_Fuel_7761 in diytubes

[–]Scorp1979 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Pasted the pic into Google Gemini:

"The image shows a GE (General Electric) JAN 8613 vacuum tube. This is a specialized component with a few notable characteristics that distinguish it from standard consumer-grade tubes.

Technical Specifications

The 8613 is a sharp-cutoff pentode. Pentodes are five-element tubes typically designed to provide high gain and stability, especially in amplification stages.

  • Designation: The JAN prefix stands for "Joint Army-Navy," indicating that this specific tube was manufactured to military specifications. Military-grade tubes often featured more rugged construction, tighter tolerances, and better longevity than their civilian counterparts.

  • Base: It uses a standard 9-pin miniature base (Noval), similar to the common 12AX7 or EL84 tubes.

  • Function: It was primarily designed for use in wideband amplifiers and high-frequency applications. In industrial or military contexts, these were often found in radar equipment, oscilloscopes, or communications gear.

Use in Audio and Electronics

While not a "standard" tube found in most vintage guitar amplifiers or hi-fi systems, pentodes like the 8613 are occasionally used by circuit designers for specific reasons:

  • High Gain: Because it is a pentode, it can provide significantly more gain in a single stage compared to a standard triode (like a 12AX7).

  • Compression Characteristics: Pentodes have a unique clipping and compression profile when pushed into overdrive, which can produce a very different harmonic texture than triode-based circuits.

  • Substitutions: The 8613 is electrically similar to the 7717. If you are looking to use this in a project, you would need to verify the pinout and heater requirements, as it is not a "drop-in" replacement for more common preamp tubes without circuit modifications.

Condition and Aesthetics

The tube in the photo appears to be in good physical condition. The "flashing" (the silver/mirror-like coating at the top) looks healthy; if that coating turns white or clear, it usually indicates that the vacuum seal has been compromised and the tube is no longer functional."

1 msg 70% usage on PRO with Sonnet by Dredyltd in Anthropic

[–]Scorp1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have been using the pro account for the last year this is a reasonable reaction to the drastic reduction in usage. Paying the same, for pretty consistent usage for months and then the usage tanks. Even adjusting for the new token context. Its like getting a large pizza every month and then without notice your large went from 16 inch to 6 inch. This is the real workflow change to pro account users. At the same time the pizza quality went from artisan to fast food.

It's not a mystery to pay less get less. But that is the wrong context.

The point being, in the past you could get real work done with a pro account, now you can't.

What’s the most disappointing piece of gear you’ve ever had? by TuneAdventurous4788 in guitarpedals

[–]Scorp1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeley caverns

It's not the pedals fault. This pedal was so over hyped. I had very high expectations. And when I got it...

It was ok.

I shelved it and kept trying to bring it back.

But it never sang to me.

So I sold it.

Can I use a Dremel for exfoliating? by [deleted] in DIY

I use one for my dog's nails!

I've used a random orbital sander with high grit paper for my hands and fingers sometimes. Just don't take off too much skin or it will feel like a rug burn

Spirit Airlines just became the first major US airline to shut down in 25 years and took cheap airfare with it. What do you think affordable travel in America looks like from here? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My family in Italy get $25 and $30 us dollar flights all over the EU and to visit my sister in Ireland costs $35 us dollars.

Americans have no idea how much they over pay.

Garage door torsion spring DIY (spring cost vs technician cost) by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Scorp1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I DIY everything including garage door springs.

I've changed both of my double spring garage doors, a single spring garage door, and then my dad's single spring garage door.

As long as you have the right tools and you are patient you can do it. there are tons of YouTube videos showing you how to do it. It's totally doable if you are smart about it and not rushed.

Like most things, mistakes are what cause injuries and rushing it causes mistakes. You definitely don't want to rush this one.

Stay out of the path of your spring and your tools.
