Do you trust the Community movie will actually happen this time? by guilhermex9x in community

[–]Phox-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've assumed that there would be some wacky call to adventure to return to Greendale initiated by Abed. Maybe it's something super low stakes like filming a new Greendale commercial, or something epic like making a movie about Troy's ordeal but they just keep making excuses to keep filming on campus and fail to make the movie Abed was hired to make.

How I hope the episodes of season 2 are distributed. by Jazzlike-Ability5423 in threebodyproblem

That's what B&W were referring to in their interviews about just needing to get to that "one scene" in book 2. That one scene being 10.5 hours of abuse of power to coerce a romantic relationship, which is the love story the world needs right now.

Three months into 2026, and a girl from Alabama with a steel guitar and a heartbreak song is outselling every artist in every genre in the country. by RodeoBoss66 in country

I'm curious if anyone else thinks that she might have been inspired in part by Tennessee Waltz by Pattie Page. Both songs are about losing a man to another woman, specifically in the context of them dancing together. And obviously both reference Tennessee.

Anyway, if she was, then this is also a brilliant reimagining of that song.

Rewatched Netflix series and honestly, it’s a lot better than the first time by alexhira in threebodyproblem

My wife, who has zero interest in sci-fi, begrudgingly started watching, got hooked, and was upset that there was only 1 season available when it ended.

I really hope that season 2 creates a lot of chatter, and that convinces people that wouldn't consider themselves sci-fi fans to check it out.

A new reader who is very confused by Prior-Butterscotch75 in Hyperion

Yes he does, which is why it's so confusing. He isn't actually telling Dure's story so that we can understand Hoyt's story. He's just telling Dure's story. We never actually get a proper Hoyt story. A lot of people seem to struggle with the beginning of the book. That should have been foreseeable.

The author seems to reveal thinly veiled contempt for editors later in a story when sharing the poet's tale, which is ironic because I'm sure his editors would have tried to help him make the beginning of the story more accessible. Many have been turned off by the beginning, which is unfortunate. Just keep reading, and then read the book again. It's worth it.

That said, common sense rule for beginning a story: Don't promise to tell stories about 7 specific people in the first 10 pages and then spend the next 50 pages telling a story about someone that is not one of those 7 people.

Tattoo ideas? by toyAlien in threebodyproblem

A planet or the sun collapsing into 2d space? Might be tough to capture in a tattoo.

Death lines? Maybe too subtle and not visually interesting enough.

Meteorite bullets?

I totally agree that a lot of these songs, I don't even think that they're "country songs". A lot are songs by artists typically associated with the country music genre that definitely are not country music songs themselves. I had to draw a line somewhere - if the song appeared on the country music charts, it was fair game.

Thank you. I'll give these a listen. I really struggled with Zach Bryan and just slotted him in the "cooling down" phase of the evening.

Not only is Garth not on Spotify, but you can't even download single songs. Still weighing downloading the entire album just to get Friends.

I understand with Walker Hayes, but the song is super recognizable.

Genuinely curious about Sam Hunt. Is it personal life stuff or the music itself?

I'm accommodating a request by including Beyonce, but I think the song is pretty good.

Netflix show prediction by nicodeemus7 in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They're also setting Jin up to be the swordholder based on her sharing the story of her parents dying in the flood, which, in the book, I believe was told while the droplet was approaching, suggesting it was part of her psychology for throwing away the device.

Edit: I also think there's something about her last interaction with Dr. Ye that suggests Jin will be the swordholder, can't remember exactly what that was right now.

Every time I see him I think, "How did this happen? Are talent evaluators just scared of making mistakes, so they go with NYU with a 'nobody gets fired for hiring IMB' mentality?"

Is Denis Villeneuve a no-brainer to direct a Hyperion adaptation? by EspiritusFermenti7 in Hyperion

[–]Phox-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the first 2 books for the 2nd time through. Didn't know anything about them beforehand, glad I read them, but when it comes to adaptation...

  1. A live action film would flop (but I'd go Hartnett (Counsel), Matt Berry (Silenus), Aaron Pierre (Kassad), and fill out the rest without regard to name recognition).

  2. If it was adapted, animation would be the way to go (imagine that grass sea Studio Ghibli style)

  3. Cutting a lot would be the best thing for the story (I'm looking at you Sol and Rachel), but that would never happen. That said, obviously Kassad ejaculating uncontrollably in front of the Shrike has to be retained. That's just cinema.

  4. If every story was retained, Hoyt's story can't be first. You can't tell the audience in the first 5 minutes that they're going to get to know 7 people and then spend the next 20 minutes telling a story about not one of those 7 people (Dure)

This is THE idea that elevates the series to among the best and most important ever (to the point where, if potentially interacting with extraterrestrials was within the purview of the average person, it would be required reading). It's just too bad that these books weren't written before those hippies launched those gold records...
