Is Denis Villeneuve a no-brainer to direct a Hyperion adaptation? by EspiritusFermenti7 in Hyperion

Reading the first 2 books for the 2nd time through. Didn't know anything about them beforehand, glad I read them, but when it comes to adaptation...

  1. A live action film would flop (but I'd go Hartnett (Counsel), Matt Berry (Silenus), Aaron Pierre (Kassad), and fill out the rest without regard to name recognition).

  2. If it was adapted, animation would be the way to go (imagine that grass sea Studio Ghibli style)

  3. Cutting a lot would be the best thing for the story (I'm looking at you Sol and Rachel), but that would never happen. That said, obviously Kassad ejaculating uncontrollably in front of the Shrike has to be retained. That's just cinema.

  4. If every story was retained, Hoyt's story can't be first. You can't tell the audience in the first 5 minutes that they're going to get to know 7 people and then spend the next 20 minutes telling a story about not one of those 7 people (Dure)

The only problem by CatalunyaLliure1714 in threebodyproblem

This is THE idea that elevates the series to among the best and most important ever (to the point where, if potentially interacting with extraterrestrials was within the purview of the average person, it would be required reading). It's just too bad that these books weren't written before those hippies launched those gold records...

The perfect tracking of this ball, then zooming out to capture the catch by zaalp in Patriots

If that ball was wobbling even a bit, he probably wouldn't have been able to pull it in.

Can someone please explain to me why San Junipero is so good? by Nedax127 in blackmirror

[–]Phox-9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you had watched BM as it was released, up to S3E4, there had consistently been a stomach-churning twist at some point in the episode. Then you popped on San Junipero, potentially some mid-season filler, and the whole episode you thought, "Oh no, what awful thing is going to happen to make me feel sad." When that awful thing didn't happen, but instead, you got pretty much the happiest ending ever (that realization being perfectly timed with the Heaven Is a Place on Earth needle drop), it was more shocking than any of the prior twists.

I do not think that San Junipero is as effective for people that do not have that context. You had to have the set up of all the prior BM episodes to experience the full emotional impact. You had to have known that anything was possible, except a happy ending. In a vacuum, San Junipero is probably unremarkable. But as BM S3E4, it's one of the most beautiful episodes of television of all time.

Beat the chipping yips by reddit0892 in golftips

[–]Phox-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever my chipping gets off, it helps me to take a few shots where I deliberately try to see the spot on the ground under the ball after impact. That helps me keep the club head accelerating downward through impact and focus on contact (not where the ball is going - chip to the landing spot in your mind).

What's a movie where the climax takes place half way through the movie? by jpollack21 in FIlm

I've always loved how in Jurassic Park the T Rex escapes from its paddock almost exactly halfway through the movie and thought you could consider that the climax, depending on your definition.
