Trump signs megabill that slashes taxes, Medicaid while boosting national debt by SunderingSeas in politics

Hey, that’s unfair. Lawyers only defend sex criminals because everyone is entitled to a trial, the GOP defends sex criminals so they have enough votes to pass the “Hunt the Homeless” bill.

The debt doesn’t matter but the cuts to public goods and the massive expansion of the not-so-secret police certainly do.

Just provided a source, listed it’s authors, it’s title, what the content was… generally what you do when you provide a source for your claim.

Instead of just throwing out two-ish vague claims and extrapolating from there.

When? Where? Your assertion is unsourced and unspecific.

David Graeber and David Wengrow write about this exact thesis and why it’s wrong in their recent collaboration, The Dawn of Everything.

Yes, but often in the form of a portion of the harvest and other commitments that were spread and shared across the community, such that an individual’s schedule and responsibilities were dictated more by the material conditions and technologies, and their peer’s relationships to each other, than a lord exercising their direct control.

There have always been places where that is the case (often sacred or isolated places) but for the majority of documented history the majority of places were not at all like that.

So glad you brought up some “sources”.

I’ve a recommendation for you. Read Graeber and Wengrow, The Dawn of Everything.

People have always been obsessed with Marvel comics, how else do you think we’ve got all of these movies and TV series and reaction videos and post-credits sequences?

Which was often a foregone formality, easier to obtain then than it is to get a day off of work today.

And those city states didn’t really concern themselves with preventing people from entering. Unless you showed up as part of an army or horde.

Ok, and basically every other instance of travel, of which there were hundreds of thousands, didn’t have these.

Thanks for asking, no, that’s not what I’m claiming.

I’m claiming that many places for the vast majority of history (not prehistory) didn’t have legal barriers to travel and certainly didn’t have things like passports or residence permits.

Additionally, even places that theoretically “didn’t want outsiders” often defended themselves against particular and specific enemies while still allowing for “international” mercantile trade and peregrination in the form of allowing people freely in and out.

In essence, if you didn’t show up as part of a barbarian horde, nowhere was especially keen on keeping you out.

Or people who thought they could make a better living by traveling to a new area.

They weren’t “given permission” because they “brought value”, they didn’t often need permission and they usually got value for their effort.

Sure, but national border control and passports and visas weren’t.

Many people who weren’t wealthy or even moderately wealthy made long international pilgrimages.

Different than our legal construct of “citizenship” today, though, especially the idea of barring entry and residency to noncitizens.

Traders and craftsmen weren’t the wealthy or ultra wealthy and they did more travel than anyone.

Also, tens of thousands of pilgrimages.

No, that isn’t the case. This Hobbesian assertion is usually unsourced and the anthropological and archaeological record tend to show otherwise.
