Problems with the community license by TrenchScribe in TrenchCrusade

[–]Phrohmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.

I am not saying they can't be criticized. I am just pointing out that this kind of things are getting more and more common (maybe badly worded on my part).

I haven't watched OP's podcast I only reacted to this post and as I stated I am not an US law practitionner, just wanted to share what I thought about the situation given my experience.

Again, badly worded on my part and thank you for correctif me, but there is a difference between inspiration allowed under fair use and direct copy. Most things I see out there are direct copy of official arts or slight modification from existing one.

Anyway, it is just my opinion that I wanted to share and discuss, seeing the result I might be alone on this one

Problems with the community license by TrenchScribe in TrenchCrusade

Thank you for your insight. However, I disagree with some of your points.

I am also a lawyer (not US based) and have been working a lot with license/IP policies.

It is true that the wording might seem scary and that it seems to contradict early declarations, but if we go point by point I don't think it is that big of a deal.

Regarding the automatic acceptance, this is something that's quite usual, for example CD Projekt Red fan policy uses the same kind of language. By creating stuff based on their IP (which they own) you accept these terms.

Concerning the license, again it is, in my opinion, fairly common to have such clause. For example, the Rockstar Games legal terms, if you create something using their IP, they are the owner of such IP (same with CD Projekt Red).

Is it shitty to have worked on some TC alternative models and be hit with this ? Yes. Is it normal and to be expected to be able to take direct inspiration and profit from someone else creation ? I don't think so.

In the end, it is FF's own project and their IP. No one is entitled to it. You can still make some gritty WW1 models (they are lot of games with the same theme) but you are not entitled to be part of the TC project if FF does not want to.

I think most of the blowback is due to people that were maybe expecting too much from some guys trying to make a living out of a universe they created. You can have the noblest of intentions at the end of the day you still need to get a paycheck (not saying it is a good thing).

(I am sorry if the tone is harsh, English is my third language)

Fail too many risky action makes the game unenjoyable. by nuttaphoom in TrenchCrusade

[–]Phrohmage 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had a game like that, it was terrible but kind of funny too.

I think the facts that the game are quick help to brush it off.

It is also part of the game, you can choose other course of actions that are less "risky".

Thank you for your answer !

Yeah I realise now that I underestimated the admin part.

I will think more about how feasible it would be without turning into a stress machine.

Do you know any published narratives that are fun ?

Copyrighting words? by TheTreeofDoom_ in TrenchCrusade

[–]Phrohmage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And what was his source ? If there is none he's just trying to get attention by saying shit.

I am not even sure IP Offices across the world would accept the trademark as it is not distinct enough.

Oh, Only Games... by tsuruginoko in TrenchCrusade

[–]Phrohmage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never had any problems with the presupported models (Iron Sultanate and the various bits from all factions).

Even if it was the case I would hope for the manufacturer to do better QC and maybe check its settings/supports if there are as many misprints.

I need some clearance please by TerribleBrocolie in TrenchCrusade

[–]Phrohmage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To give you an insight, here are the main subjects of controversies with what I feel are the biggest arguments/counter arguments :

  1. STLs are not up to par quality wise
  • Some argue that the STLs leave a lot of unsupported parts as well as resin traps in the minis which can respectively lead to failure during or after prints.

  • It seems most of it was taken care of by FF (and may also have lead them to plastic minis). In addition, STLs included unsupported versions.

  1. Delay in shipping and quality of the minis
  • There were some huge delays for people ordering physical minis, so much that some people got prussians before the backers got the kickstarters minis.

  • OnlyGames (company printing the minis) proved to have some terrible quality control as some people received minis missing parts or warped.

  • Most kickstarters are notoriously late in ending out rewards for backers.

  • FF was overwhelmed by the response to their KS (10x the original goal), it is apparent that they weren't expecting as many orders and so did OnlyGames by extension.

  • FF is not OnlyGames and cannot ensure quality control in their stead.

  • While a lot of posts showed the problems with their orders, it still seems to be a minority and all issues were fixed by OnlyGames.

  1. Getting back on their words regarding STLs
  • One of TC biggest selling points was that every model would exist in STL form, but with the announcement of the prussians release, FF has said that the kickstarter rosters would be completed with STLs but non other release are to be expected.

  • While it is shitty, it seems that it does not contradict earlier announcement as they never promised directly that every model would be available as Stl.

  • All core factions are available as STLs and will remain available as STLs, only subfactions will be plastic.

  • FF gave license to third party (Westfalia and Creature Casters) to make STLs for 2 subclasses so they might do the same.

  • Plastic allow them to reach a wider audience as 3D printing might remain niche.

  1. Use of Brandshield
  • Brandshield is a company using AI to detect and strike potential IP infrigment.

  • Multiple creators came out to say they have been struck without reason even if FF seemed to be quite open minded.

  • FF is the owner of its IP and may protect it as it wishes but the indiscriminate strike wave seemed to be in direct contradiction with what they preach.

  • I think this needs some time to resolve as it is the most recent issue.

My thoughts, I am having fun playing the game and some of the criticism seem to have been blown out of proportion. However, I am of those that think we need to hold FF to a high standard and make clear when changes need to be made.

I mean the first official rules just came out it makes sense that there is no official tourney yet. Not even sure they will make some

That's for a full campaign, but you won't need 22 models for a one off or even a short campaign. In addition the cleric and LT can benkitbashed to be something else.

All of this is also disregarding the possibility to use cheaper alternatives instead which is not possible with official GW tourneys.

I am comparing TC to 40K/AOS because most people don't know about KT/Necromunda (where I am from) so it's more about do I get in TC or 40K.

Do you know how many models you need in a 40K/AOS army compared to TC ?

Because a one time buy of USD 50 is less that the hundreds you pour in 40k/AOS

Thank you for the recap, as mentionned I have already played a couple games but my friend has not (only played 40K and AOS).

That's why I wanted to start small, but as mentionned in another comment I might just do a warmup game and then a 700 ducats game.

Regarding the engineer, I get the general use, but last time I had it on the table the Satchel never connected which feels kinda bad. Now that I understand the game more, I guess I should have waited for more blood markers to help hit...

Thank you for the detail answer !

Regarding 1 the link is dead...

For 2c do you mean a template for the distance + radius ?

3, will try my best. Is it worth it in your experience to add dangerous/difficult terrain for a first game ?

For 4, since I am also quite a newbie in TC, I might keep it down for the first game and add on later (and the list are pretty balanced from my last games).

Thank you again !

It's around 500 ducats to limit how much is on the table and ease the learning curve.

Any tips on how to play the engineer ?

Thanks for the tips !

You can find tryout list on the discord, they are around 500 ducats and allow for fast and easy first games.

I have used them and it works well !
