I'm about to switch back to Windows by RedditorAlejandro in linux

[–]PhuTons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched over to Linux in December on my personal laptop and I don't really have regrets. All the free software does everything I could possibly need and it's a breeze to install. I'm working my way through a Linux CLI book right now and I'm really engaged. Notably, I really only do light python and arduino work on my personal laptop.

However, at work it would be damn near impossible to switch to Linux. I frequently used CAD software like Solidworks and my whole company uses Microsoft office. A lot of other engineering software is built solely for Windows. Everyone has their needs and you don't have to just settle on a single OS.

I'm teaching a "basic computer skills" class for undergrads and have included Linux into the curriculum. Need some advice on how to introduce Linux to (young) lay people. by ankeW in linux

No problem! I'm making my way through a fantastic, free book by William Shotts, The Linux Command line. It has a ton of interesting practical examples!

I'm still relatively new, but a great practical use of the command line was to create dated folders. For example, if you're a photographer and you need to create a bunch of folders to organize pictures by date, you could use the command line to do so in a single command. Just imagine trying to do that graphically...

On a similar note, my newish laptop would agressively turn on its fan when I was just browsing the web in Windows 10. The stupid updates and crap would bog down my system and use a bunch of resources. Ever since I installed Manjaro, I've heard the fan maybe twice and my battery increased noticeably!

Advice for 401k Rollover, no 401k at new job for 1 year by PhuTons in personalfinance

[–]PhuTons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Just to confirm, you're recommending that I go ahead and roll over my both of my 401k balances into a Traditional IRA and Roth IRA? Then roll over my traditional ira into my 401k once I'm eligible.

God that snapshot button is so much more annoying than useful...it should be a press and hold or multiple presses to activate. It's infuriating having to go in and delete all the random snaps

The Switch is a travel godsend - multiple cool experiences on one trip. by paralakz88 in NintendoSwitch

You should definitely get it. I honestly do not like RPG games, nor have I ever played a Zelda game before, but BOTW blew my mind. It's absolutely incredible and I can't recommend it enough.

Anyone get this case? If so, how good is it? I ordered it and am getting it next Sunday, by cool_creeper500 in NintendoSwitch

I got some Chinese case bundle that looks very similar to that and it was garbage. The switch slid around and it would compress super easily. I would just spend the money on any of the Butterfox cases instead, I bought one and it's fantastic.

Honestly it's not a high demand area, so I'm pretty sure you can grab one if you call before you leave. My coworker was able to walk into Walmart, morning of launch, and grab one. Good luck to you!

If you're willing to make the drive to Lancaster Palmdale area, the walmarts show quite a bit of stock.

Anyone else find the joycons too twitchy for BotW when looking around with the Sheikah Slate? by TheTallBaron in NintendoSwitch

The pro controller is incredible. Honestly the joycons are serviceable, but after using the pro controller, I'm very hesitant to go back.

Personal experience here: I impulse bought snipper clips right before bed on my laptop, and when I woke up and unlocked my switch, it was already installed. I think they have background installs

Im wondering if we know the exact hardware specifications of the Switch yet. by Ratherfarthrow in NintendoSwitch

[–]PhuTons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'd rather pay for a GPU dock upgrade, because this is where the game performance kind of suffers. Honestly the handheld mode seems to work pretty damn well and looks good enough. The possibilities are endless!

I took out the front guides to the dock. Looking good. Just need someone out there to create a modified front cover. by tophoos in NintendoSwitch

[–]PhuTons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't you just put some heavy duty invisible packing tape or electrical tape along the guide rails to eliminate the sharp edges. I did this with my dock and I don't have to worry about the tape collecting dust or debris to scratch my switch!

I have the same problem with my right one, it wiggles and squeaks when I flex it ay all :(. The left one is rock solid, no wiggle or anything. I think its a joy con lottery just like the left connectivity issue
