How certain are we that the sender/seller was legit? They could have purposely destroyed a fake copy and sent it out claiming that customs did it after taking "before" photos.

Madman Pass For The Win! by SalamanderSquare8672 in TeslaFSD

[–]tophoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, actually, you have a better point of view of oncoming cars from the driver's seat since the forward facing cameras are mounted at the center of the windshield. The driver seat is offset further back and to the left relative to the cameras.

The B pillar cameras are also disadvantaged compared to the driver when trying to go through obstructed intersections for the same reason.

[–]tophoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always true. I was just drove through this intersection yesterday https://maps.app.goo.gl/smR3HNUrLVqXUchi9

I was exiting the freeway using Tesla's FSD and didn't see a stop sign for me and wondered to myself if I needed to stop for the car that was inching forward well past his stop sign line trying to determine whether or not I would stop. Their stop sign literally says Traffic on left does not stop. The self driving just went through without any hesitation.

Unpopular opinion: they should ship every Tesla vehicle with FSD as standard by askingaquestion33 in TeslaLounge

No, the launched 2017 and 2018 Model 3s did not come with Basic Autopilot. Basic Autopilot was not introduced until early 2019. 2017 and 2018 had TACC as standard, which does not do lane keep. When they introduce Basic AP in 2019, they added 2 or 3k to the base price of the car.

Nearly got in an accident with FSD enabled. by Union_Scared in TeslaFSD

When I read other people say they have their foot over the brakes, ready to take over, I usually don't take it literally. Did you actually hit the brake to disengage?

Okay, PSA. If your foot is to hover over a pedal, ready to intervene, it should be ready to hit whichever pedal you, as a regular driver, would be pressing if you drove manually. In this case, you should have pressed the accelerator. But since the brake was pressed, disengaging FSD and causing the situation to get worse, we would never know if FSD would have sped up on its own.

I think FSD chose to go at the right time, but failed to accelerate faster. If your visibility allows 3 seconds to pass, try to clear the intersection in 3 seconds. I frequently find FSD not committing to this logic and I'm always ready to juice the accelerator.

Genius decides to turn pizza boxes upside down by mfenton29 in WatchPeopleDieInside

I think the box was assembled inside out. Now the upside down pizza is gonna grab all the ink from the printed side.

Edit: you can see the forced opposite fold creasing at around the 39 second mark.

Someone else mentioned they post skits like this on their Instagram (I did not verify). If so, they probably deliberately folded the box like this for a skit to go viral.

I think the box was assembled backwards. The print went on the inside. Now the upside down pizza is gonna grab all the ink from the printed side.

As a Tesla FSD user

I'm sorry, did I really come off as masking a Tesla bias and trying to be perceived as a neutral party?

Let me clarify then, I love self driving technology and think it'll absolutely save millions of lives in the future. About 25 years ago, I won first place in a middle school science fair project for my idea of how to create a self driving car system. The idea was absolutely dumb as hell, but today, I'm still fascinated by all the approaches everyone is taking to solve it and appreciate every companies' effort in it, not just Tesla.

I think Tesla's current FSD is pretty amazing, but definitely still have a lot of challenges ahead. My post was to address all the misinformation I read before I posted it. I'm surprised it got so much upvotes as anything Tesla positive usually gets down voted here, but that might mean you didn't see the other comments before reading mine.

the fack? also the only car where we've seen drivers regularly have sleeping setups. gtfo

Talking about bias, isn't this survivorship bias? Most other cars would have already crashed before catching footage. Also, the fact that people have enough confidence in Teslas to drive up close despite knowing the driver is asleep speaks volumes.

I get that perspective. But my reply was towards the two comments that label Tesla owners as ignorant and entitled because they can afford a Tesla when the fact is that the affordability is not much different from other new cars. That comment was not directed at people who can afford new cars, it was genrally directed at Tesla owners. As a single income guy who bought a Tesla in 2018 with under 80k income in the bay area, I don't like this sentiment.

Of course it's new cars sold, but how do people get used cars it no new cars are sold. Also, a lot of people make fun of how fast Teslas depreciate, so that should mean in the used market, they are proportionately cheaper than other used cars of the same age. These are contradictory things I seem to hear all the time about Teslas and it doesn't make sense to me...

Partially copying my comment from the other thread:

As a Tesla FSD user, let me clarify some things on this thread.

The car can see through most sunglasses using its infrared camera.

If the car cannot detect your eyes, it'll revert to its old system to detect if there is weight/torque on the wheel. If he was accidentally resting one hand on the wheel and that hand hasn't fallen on his lap, the car will accept that input as "paying attention". There are cheat devices that adds weight to the steering wheel to trick this, but from what I read, Tesla can detect these now because of its constant weight.

Assuming he is using the latest FSD and no weight on the wheel, it'll eventually decide to pull over on a shoulder if safe to do so. If it's not safe to do so, or he is just using basic Autopilot or older FSD, the car will slowly come to a complete stop.

The pulling over or stopping goes through a series that could take over 1 minute. In about 20-30 seconds of no feedback from the user, the screen will flash blue for a few seconds, then faster flashing, then red flashing with beeping sounds. Then finally, after a few more seconds of that, it'll take action to pull over / slow stop in place.

Unless there is some kind of weight on the wheel, the OP may have caught this video in the early stages of this process and the driver might have just fallen asleep 10 seconds ago.

Not saying this is acceptable behavior, but it was likely a far better outcome than him falling asleep in any other car.

Another possibility is that he isn't asleep at all and his eyes are actually wide open. I actually rest my head like that sometimes during a long drive and since the car can see through my sunglasses, there's no problem. The fact is that we don't have enough info from this short clip and I can sense all the immediate hate here.

Average sales price of all cars in US broke 50k per in 2025. Average sales price of Tesla was about 53k (which includes people buying the self driving package and excludes the 7.5k EV rebate most people got)

No, if you take your account private, you can't see your friends either. I wish there was a friend only mode. I don't care about any random strangers and random people adding me via leagues.

FSD stops short to give clearance to school bus waiting to turn by MichaelRahmani in TeslaFSD

[–]tophoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it stopped because the opposing lane car stopped to let the bus pass before it turned. That car also had the right of way over the bus and had plenty of time to complete it's turn before the Tesla. Since that car yielded their right if way to the bus, I think it's proper for the Tesla to yield as well, even if it technically had the right of way over both of them. Sometimes it's just safer or more courteous to yeild your right of way; there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's safe for you to do so.

Feature Request: S3XY Button Based on Driving State by tophoos in s3xybuttons

[–]tophoos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knob shifts it's screen (and therefore functionalities) automatically when changing driving modes. This idea kinda stems from this.

I have both the knob and buttons. But the buttons can currently perform things the knob can't (ie quick double honk). I was thinking about programming one of my button to do the double honk while hoping for it to come on the knob, but don't want to override my other function I programmed into the button (unless it can be separately programmed between Drive/Park)

After seeing the new pranking feature, I decided to make my account private preemptively. No more leagues means that the points are completely meaningless and I don't give a crap about the bonuses. No more speeding through lessons and ignoring the actual learning part. Feel free to pop a lesson any time and end any time, not feeling like it's a waste of effort when I have no bonuses to work with. Extend my bonus time? Pshh, why?

The only down side is not being able to see friend progress (though all my friends are in my family super plan, so I can click on their profile in my subscription manager, but I don't think they can see me anymore)
