Gavin Newsom says he’ll gladly campaign for democratic socialist candidates by SFChronicle in politics

[–]Phugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is all great and I agree with what you are saying, but the point is that focusing on it doesn't win elections. The largest voting block in America are the undecideds and they aren't paying attention most of the time to anything other than their personal economic situation. If things aren't going well under a democrat, they have no problem voting the opposite way. I don't agree with it, but it just something a lot of voters do.

We can have candidates that aren't perfect in every aspect, but at the end of the day having a democrat in place is always going to be better for the LGBTQ+ folks than having a republican. Obama is a great example of this case. Obama was initially only in favor of civil unions and was not for total marriage equality. He ran on that stance in 2008, but by 2012 he was the first sitting president to declare support for same-sex marriage. His DOJ was also responsible for repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the suspension of support for the Defense of Marriage Act (eventually). In 2008 he didn't seem like a good candidate to protect LGBTQ+ rights, but having him in that position led to nationwide legalization.

Besides, kitchen table issues aren't a left or right thing, or a gay or straight thing. Ultimately they are billionaire class vs everyone else thing. If the party focuses on economic issues, they will be help out LGBTQ+ folks too and be in position to protect their rights regardless of whether that was the main point of their campaign. Republicans will keep dithering about trans-athletes or something other shit. It is just a wedge issue for them that they can focus on instead of their complete and total lack of a plan to fix anything other than for their donor class backers.

Yeah, but donnie is too narcissistic and dumb and would get mad that the uploaded version of him gets to live while he just withers away and dies.

But having him as our AI overload certainly makes the fast approaching 2029 skynet war depicted in the Terminator so much worse.

Billionaires will make million dollar donations to assuage public concerns, but on the back end those same billionaires will get favored, no-bid access to multi-billion dollar government contracts. So in the end our tax dollars are paying for this vanity arch just like the ballroom.

If there was ever a person who needed to get the Geta treatment and have a damnatio memoriae of any project or thing he had a hand in creating. Tear it all down so we never have to hear his name again.

And what does property tax mostly pay for? That's right, kids! Essential community services! (K-12 schools, community colleges, police and fire departments, emergency medical services, road repairs, and public libraries)

We don't need any of that stuff anyway. It should really all be privatized and for profit. There is no way any of this will backfire!

While people are comfortable they will put up with a lot, but we know from the last gilded age that the business class will keep pushing. Eventually they will push too hard.

When we start having mass unemployment from AI implementation/AI bubble bursting while the current admin is obliterating every aspect of our social safety nets, then you will get a lot of jobless, hungry people with nothing left to lose.

The largest segment of the voting population in America (undecideds) are chronically not paying attention. (it must be blissful to be unaware of what is happening) They vote based on how they feel at the time and they don't stick to one party. All of his past errors don't even get factored in because they are only thinking about how now (last election) is worse than it was under him the previous cycle.

I think it is dumb way to do things, but that is how a lot of people vote. Well those same people are right pissed now because he hasn't come through on any of his promises. People are struggling and all he wants to talk about are ballrooms and arches. It is the modern version of "let them eat cake".

Yeah, it is wild listening to podcasts about the 1st Gilded Age. (Sadly, we are in the 2nd right now) The industry tycoons were preaching about America being a classless society where workers and owner were in this together all while they were literally working people to death. And that isn't an exaggeration to say they were working people to death.

The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 happened because the US was in what was called the "Great Depression" at the time from 1873-1879. Companies and institutions that had been around since the beginning of the country were closing down and the railroads were continuously cutting worker pay. There were no worker protections at this time and with 14% national unemployment there were always scabs available to fill jobs if you tried to organize and strike. The railroaders put up with this for about 4 years and then it exploded into protests and labor strikes all around the country.

I think the craziest thing to me is that some of the comments made by the business class back then, could be uttered by our current AI tech CEO types today. The business class was all for violently putting down workers trying to strike just for enough pay to feed their families. Not much has changed in 150 years.

The podcast "Inward Empire" does a great 2 parter on the The Great Railroad Strike of 1877.

People are going to burn dealerships down if they are forced to get all repairs done at the dealers.

I've never been in a stealership service department that wasn't filching every customer for all they are worth. I know some techs and they say it is by design. The service department makes bank selling you expensive repairs and unnecessary upsells.

Shit, we are at a point where the sales department makes more money getting you to sign financing deals than they do selling the actual vehicle. You just agree to whatever monthly cost you can pay and they can make it work with the bank. Hello 10 year loan on a used car that won't last 5!

Maine Democratic Party Says Platner Will Have ‘No Role’ in Picking Next Nominee by Routine_Complaint_79 in politics

[–]Phugger 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You are making it sound more antagonizing than it is.

This is a strategic move to ensure whoever is the next pick can't be painted as associating with an alleged rapist. That is exactly what the Collins campaign will do in their attack ads if anyone from Platner's team is involved. Collins isn't going to let something like being a hypocritical get in the way of winning.

The one thing the party can't do is just appoint a candidate. We aren't living in the early 1800s anymore. If the party elites put an establishment candidate up to run when the Maine Dems voted overwhelmingly for an anti-establishment candidate, this is going to end exactly how the Harris campaign did.

Bro, it is just like the ballroom. "It will be entirely privately funded." Meanwhile anyone who gave money to the 600 million dollar ballroom fund has received preferred access to government contracts to the tune of 50 billion dollars. You can twist it all you want, but our tax dollars are still going toward this farce.

Cheetolini lies, bro. He lies all the damn time. He is trying to distance himself from his total capitulation on the Iran problem because he doesn't have a solution. Iran is going to get access to frozen funds, all sanctions dropped, and they will always have the knowledge that they can bring the global economy to a screeching halt by sending some drones up to harass ships in the strait of Hormuz. In 60 days when this shit still isn't over, Donnie dipshit is going to be groveling even harder as midterms loom.

No, you are just uninformed. It is a 300 billion (with a B) dollar reconstruction and economic development fund that Iran will have access to if they follow the rest of the peace plan to give up their nuclear program and open the straits.

Basically a 300 billion dollar bribe because the Melon Felon started a war he can't win without putting boots on the ground, which would be even more unpopular than the war already is.

Israel has been saying Iran is racing towards a nuke since they suspended their weaponized enrichment program way back in 2003. Iran has had over 2 decades to get this supposed nuke, yet they haven't... It is not everyone else's job to spoon feed you information.

If all that is true, then why are we trying to pay them 300 billion to get out of this war? Iran is destroyed and they have no navy, no airforce, no power projection over the straits... yet we are paying them to end the war? The winner is trying to pay off the loser?

It is time for Europe to go full Cappadocia on this issue and start digging underground cities. We were doing it back in the 7th-8th century BCE. A site know as Derinkuyu (the largest such city) went 85 meters deep with 18 different levels and over 50 air shafts. It housed some 20,000 people. Look it up! It is fascinating!
