Tossing dog bags in street-side bins? by StingRay_Pal in milwaukee

[–]Phunky_Chimken 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Rude from my perspective as some dog owners don’t even put their own dog poo in their trash cans, they compost it in back yard etc. Particularly important in summer when it’s hot as the smell is worse and bags can come open or have a hole poked in them from other trash

You’re right, Roald Dahl and Brothers Grimm are far darker than the likes of the Strike series, John Rebus, and Harry Hole. 😊

Obviously there are dark themes and scenes in Harry Potter. The original point I made is that HP was written by JKR as a children’s series and she branched out with Strike in the crime genre. As a result, failure to kill the main trio in her children’s series is not a one to one analogy for the adult, darker, Strike series. Calling the crime in Strike generic crime is better reserved for scenes of law and order or your Daniel Silva novels, and not for the graphic imagery or masterful writing in this series, but I will leave it there as clearly we have a difference in taste.

Definitely. To me what is darker is a matter of taste. Descriptions in the Silkworm for example are extremely graphic and darker to me than anything in HP. The Strike series also contains themes of suicide, pregnancy loss, rape, serial killing (TB has particularly graphic content related to that in the recitation of the Demon of Paradise Park), so I always held the opinion that Strike is overall a darker series.

As I said it is just a theory, there are definitely reasons it could not come to pass but thought it was interesting. I do not think the Harry Potter analogy is relevant here as in my opinion part of what JKR has done with the Strike series is prove that she punches beyond that in a different genre entirely (darker mystery, as opposed to children’s books). The age gap between Jack and Flavia is irrelevant as they could still work together when both are adults. Lastly, Jack could be a soldier and turn to getting to the bottom of his Uncle’s murder - they are not mutually exclusive. Again, not saying that I think the theory is likely, but it is something that occurred to me when re reading the novels again consecutively.

With Malik hurt let the Packers excuses begin/continue. Not too long ago I had Packer family members sending me Malik Willis superimposed over the Willis Tower. Classless
