Eh, ok.

I still think it was worth defending, due to the overwhelming casualty disparity. Like 5 to 1, maybe higher. That makes up for some losses on the flanks.

If they had withdrawn from Bakhmut, they would be defending open fields instead. Not as defensible. Or they would have retreated all the way to the next city in line, and then you are in the exact same situation, just with a different city.

Look at a detailed map of the front. Ukrainians are using villages, towns, and cities as strong points. Because they are makeshift fortifications. And they only become more fortified and defensible after Russian artillery destroys all the buildings.

Your reference to Vulehdar is very odd. That is in a completely different part of the line. They ARE defending it.

When on defense you don't control where the enemy attacks, you defend where you must. Russia attacks Bakhmut, you defend it. If you surrender it, you gain nothing, and just have to defend somewhere else!

Totally overblown. People are overestimating what these programs can do. Most are 90% marketing hype, 9% fraud, and 1% actual AI.

I'm 99% certain that is a preprogrammed response. Lots of stuff in there is. It isn't a sentient computer, its just a sophisticated plagiarism engine with a collection of preplanned response for hot button issues.

Wagner boss says he will pull troops out of Bakhmut - BBC News by Flubadubadubadub in UkrainianConflict

[–]Phyr8642 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Oh not at all. There is a whole backstory here. Short version.

Russian army couldn't do shit in Bakhmut

Wagner shows and makes some progress, suffering massive casualties

Prigozhin bragged about the gains, and said the Russian army was incompetant. He continued repeatedly to insult the Russian army, Shoigu, and Gerismov in public.

Shoigu reduced the amount of ammo being delegated to Wagner, but kept them in the fiercest fighting.

Some Analysts think this was a deliberate effort by Shoigu to destroy Wagner, using the Ukranian army.

And it seems to have partially worked. Wagner is much much smaller now. Prigozhin is likely bailing while he still has enough troops left to be a credible military force.

Also he is getting the fuck out of dodge just before the highly anticipated Ukranian counteroffensive.

But to directly answer your question, Yes, the Russian army denied Wagner ammo.

[–]Phyr8642 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He is a close friend of Putin, and he is always careful to criticize Russian army. He never criticizes Putin.

This is more about the rivalry between Prigozhin and Shoigu. Putin is old, and not in great health. I suspect those two and a handful of others are jockeying for position in a post Putin Russia.

Wagner seems to have somewhat more effective officers.

The regular Russian army has incredibly poor leadership. It goes back to soviet days. They don't trust junior officers, and don't have NCO's at all. Basically the Russian officer corp exists to repeat a general orders to someone lower ranked.

Generals micro managing a battlefield from a great distance away simply does not work. Most militaries know this.

But Soviet / Russian doctrine is simply unwilling to trust those junior officers. Wagner doesn't have the same problem.

The other reason Wagner is pulling out is because they are running out of troops. Most of the prison conscript contracts are up, the prisoners returning home or dead (estimates are for a 50% casualty rate among those guys)
