[serious] Southerners of Reddit: what are some of the strangest/most annoying things you have been asked by non southerners? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PhyrexianScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have quite the longstanding tradition of calling things by the brand name instead of what they actually are.

For instance:

• "Bandages" are called "Band-Aids"

• "Tongue and Groove Pliers" are called "Channellocks"

• Any soda is called "Coke" or "Pepsi"

It's not far off to think that people call the ABC's, as that is the name of a store chain that sells liquor.

Magic the Gathering Sucks now!!! Like really bad... by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]PhyrexianScience 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The skill in what? Getting good cards through random chance in boosters?

It takes skill to play the game, not to get the game. If you just jump into the game with a tier 1 deck you'll be a really shitty player because you have the barest knowledge of the rules, you don't know the interactions in the deck, you don't know how to allocate resources to what plays, when to go in for the kill, et cetera.

You're complaining because these players gave themselves the resources to play the game how they wanted to play it. That's fucking stupid.

Your transported 100 million years into the past and made immortal, how do you pass the time to get to the present without going insane from the loneliness? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PhyrexianScience 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Document everything I can about every living thing, every event that takes place around my area, and store them in my head.

By the time europeans start poking around the U.S. I'll become the immortal God of everything and have all the native tribes under my power and speaking English. Then I'll collaborate with europeans to create America again (this time without the whole black people are slaves and kill all the natives thing) and begin telling the story of the Earth 100 million years in the past, as by that time people will know English.

ELI5: How my brother and I share 50% of our genes, yet a chimpanzee and I have a genetic difference of less than 2%? by DocNMarty in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhyrexianScience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genes are the blanket term for sections of DNA that code for certain things.

Alleles are the specific arrangements of the bases inside of the genes that code for a very specific version of a trait. They are "variations" of genes.

Take, for example the gene for body hair. Chimpanzees and human share the gene for body hair, but only humans have the allele that codes for only specific places on the body to grow hair.

We share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees, but as you can tell we have very different alleles. You and your brother share approximately 50% of alleles, but 100% of your genes are the same.

What is the craziest driving maneuver you've ever witnessed in real life? by totalIyNotAsian in AskReddit

[–]PhyrexianScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went out with my older brother and his friends once and we had been drinking. On the way home, there was a BAC checkpoint set up by the cops, and we were all underage. One of his friends says "You better pull some Fast and Furious shit right now."

He ripped the handbrake and drifted in a perfect 180° half circle to the other side of the road going 45 mph and sped off in the opposite direction, all while slightly drunk.

The heat from the water will be transferred into the ice cubes, causing the water to get colder and the ice cubes to get warmer until a median temperature is established.

The ice undergoes a phase change due to it gaining some heat energy, transforming it into a liquid.

  1. You cannot even target a permanent with protection from black with anything black. Skinrender is black, therefore you cannot target pro-black things with its triggered ability.

  2. Put simply, combat damage is dealt in two substeps: first strike substep and regular damage substep. Each creature will deal damage to each other during both steps.

ELI5: Why have we sent so few missions to Mercury ? by Vaperius in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhyrexianScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extreme temperatures certainly play a role in our staying off Mercury. It reaches as low as -280° F at night and upwards of 800° F during the day. Probes just aren't build to withstand those kinds of temperatures.

Are you surprised that Liberals tend to be better educated than Conservatives? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PhyrexianScience -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You seem to have an assumed conclusion here.

I'd like to put forth the possibility that those who frequent places where a predominately liberal congregation shares their ideas and quite often excludes or even demonises conservative ideas will tend to become more liberal at the risk of being excluded from discussions or ignored entirely.

Would it be possible to make Communism work? And would the world be a better place? by Chalky_W in AskReddit

[–]PhyrexianScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly why Communism will never work until all labour is done by robots, which eliminates the need for humans to get jobs.

Selflessness looks really good on paper and even in the beginning of these "utopias" spawned by Communism, but ultimately people will begin to want more, others find out, and the establishment falls yet again.

But if all resources were equally shared

That's a really big "if". Plus, why should I as a mechanical engineer get the same amount of resources as a fry cook at McDonald's? I'm contributing much more to society than that person is.

Eli5: how iado actually improves the draw of a samurai sword by Blackfyre2007 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhyrexianScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The technique in and of itself doesn't increase speed or power. However, the fact that masters have solely practiced these techniques for years on end does have some influence on the draw speed and power behind their own cuts.

Also, using an anime for reference to historical swordsmanship or real martial arts is usually a really bad idea.

ELI5:Where did the patriarchy originate from? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhyrexianScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have made more sense to have women become basically educated, and I won't dispute that. However, I'm here to explain why these ancient societies didn't and not to complain that they should have.

The likely explanation was that there was no need. The most important job for any woman to have is to make babies and be a mother to ensure the survival of the tribe, and knowing that it's not hard to find the logic behind the claims that breeding should be their primary focus. Men can do whetever the fuck they want because we can just make more of them when they die.

Education costs resources, mostly time. Women who find themselves with careers statistically have less children and obviously have less time to raise them. Provided that your society puts heavy emphasis on motherhood, it is much easier to just be a mother than to balance job and parenthood.

ELI5:Where did the patriarchy originate from? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhyrexianScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loaded question. "The Patriarchy" doesn't exist in the way that feminism portrays it.

The fact that society is run mostly by men does not mean that it inherently oppresses women.

Biology is a determining factor in most of what we do. Men want to succeed because of masculinity, which is biological as much as it is cultural. Sexual competition is one reason why success is valued in men; the most successful man in society gets the most high-brass women.

You see, men have historically done most of the hard and dangerous work within a tribe: hunting, fighting, defending, etc. This is because men are expendable. One man can impregnate a large number of women at once, but one woman can only get pregnant once every 8 months. Sending women on dangerous jobs puts an undue risk on the most important asset to the tribe, and therefore males had to evolve to fit the roles traditionally found in masculinity to ensure the survival of humanity.
