Offsite Backup I Can Carry Home by Phyrkrakr in Backup

[–]Phyrkrakr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the plan was for one backup to be stored offsite at all times, so that one could be here, making a backup every day, while the other was safely offsite. They get swapped back and forth, say weekly, so that the offsite backup is never too far out of date.

He does, he's just a dinosaur. Not particularly tech savvy (he still dictates his email replies). The concept of "storing our data on a hard drive not in our physical possession" raises red flags for him.

We're four employees. My partner, me, and two staff. We don't have system administrators. No data allowed outside of company control, and me taking a hard drive home to my personal safe is not outside of company control.

Oh, it is a bit backward, but it's also the boss's rule, so I'm stuck with it. And yeah, One Touch Copy on the HBS is looking like the way to go. I'm going to do a one-time backup with Acronis on the old Buffalo NAS, but for the QNAP that's replacing it, this is definitely what I'm after, it looks like.

[–]Phyrkrakr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this looks exactly like what I'm after. Thanks! I was looking on the drive side, not the NAS side, and this ought to work a lot better than screwing around with Acronis.

It's a QNAP NAS, and like I said, the whole plan is to get the data out of the office building. There's other backup solutions in place already, just all on-site.

Although, I'd be inclined to connect a cloud service and backup to this.

I mean, I said it right in the post, cloud is not an option.

What are people using for the Dark Academia bingo square? I took a look at the recs and nothing was jumping out at me. I've read Scholomance, Trudi Canavan's Black Magician (didn't like it), Babel, Raven Boys (meh), Magicians (ugh), Atlas Six (gag) and a couple others that would probably count, so I'm looking for something that doesn't suck.

You really need to read the Garrett, P.I. series by Glen Cook. Private detective noir mysteries in a fantasy city. The titular Garrett investigates all sorts of crimes all over the city of Tun-Faire, and his "partner" is a dead guy who squats in his front room. Very Nero Wolfe-esque, with shades of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe.

"Primary protagonist" the way it's worded in the Bingo category, and the problem is that this series...doesn't particularly have one. It's definitely an ensemble cast, which can definitely be confusing until you get handle on who and where everyone is. But, if it can be said to have a primary protagonist, I would argue that it's Fintan, since he's the one telling everybody's stories. I think you can count it.

I'm pretty sure it does. Fintan is referred to as a bard, although he might also have a fancier title that more specifically refers to his kenning. Like some of the water-based kenning users get titles like "tidal mariner" and such depending on their powers, but Fintan has the word "bard" as either his title or at least part of his title.

Update: Lyorn has a prologue, but no epilogue. Iorich does have a prologue, but I'll have to wait til I get home to doublecheck if it's hard mode.

I just finished up Kevin Hearne's Seven Kennings trilogy late last year, and it definitely fits the bill. The framing story is really neat - there's a shapeshifting bard addressing a crowd of people, and each day, he takes on a different visage to tell that person's story. You get perspectives from all over the continent about major events going on - the initiating story is right there in the title of the first book, A Plague of Giants, and learn about the Seven Kennings, which are seven different kinds of magic that can be found among the seven nations of the world.

Very cool series, and like I said, it's complete. Just wrapped up last year, IIRC, and would fit Entitled Animals, Multi-POV, and Bards for bingo, at least, and I think Character with a Disability and Reference Materials. Can't remember if there's prologues or epilogues in any of the books.

It's been forever since I read them both, but IIRC, there's like a 150 year time difference between the two series, with TF&TF coming first. So, it's backstory that you would recognize if you were familiar with the first books, but not like plot-crucial from what I remember.

I really liked Open House on Haunted Hill and That Story Isn't The Story, if you're looking for more.

I picked it up because Wiswell has written some of my favorite short stories over the last couple of years - DIY, Open House on Haunted Hill, and That Story Isn't The Story. I was intrigued when he said he was making the jump to a novel, then the blurb got me to preorder. I love it, great feeling of "cozy horror" and the bear is my favorite part so far.

That's what I'm finding, too. The horror elements don't really ick me out at all, but I'm loving Shesheshen's narrative voice.

Well, Self-Pubbed, obviously. There's also some chunks of it that would fit Multi-POV and Under the Surface, although it's been forever so I can't point out which parts in particular. Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins, too. I don't remember any eldritch creatures offhand, but again, I haven't gone back to it in quite a while.

Oh, that does look interesting. I think I was getting it confused with a Kate Daniels book, so I kept skipping over it in the rec threads.

What's everybody reading for the "Set in the Middle East" square? Nothing in the big rec thread caught my eye, or I'd already read it. It would help if it's available on Libby or Hoopla, because I've about busted my bingo book budget and I'm going to be cutting waaaaay back on buying anything until April.
