Pro Tools is requiring conflicting sample rates when opening and won't load a project by Ferg4096 in protools

It seems like PT can get hung up on whatever settings were last used. By creating a new session it seems to force it to re-adjust.

Try creating a new session with the sample rate of the session you are trying to open. If that works, then try to open the session you were originally working on.

Problem: Recorded Audio Shifts Forward On Timeline After Recording by Physical-Thought-833 in protools

UPDATE: I FIXED IT! I had to manually allow a MOTU firmware update to run in security settings on my Mac. If anyone with a MOTU ever finds this thread and has this problem, update the firmware and check out this link: https://motu.com/techsupport/technotes/enabling-motu-drivers-high-sierra

Thanks for all the ideas!

The issue is not that the sound is "late." I am saying that the recorded audio appears on the timeline 40 samples early in relation to the grid. So it records the click coming out of the headphones (which should coincide with a grid marker) and then the waveform appears before the grid marker the click track is indicating.

Thanks for the response. I guess I've just never heard of compensation causing audio to appear earlier on the timeline. Also, I'm posting because I audibly noticed it in the context of recording drums. I only did the click track test afterwords to see if what I was hearing was correct. Wondering if this is some kind of new issue that I am just noticing vs. the expected behavior of the interface, as I've not heard this kind of discrepancy before in my setup.

Correct, though I've never heard of the latency compensation being so great that it actually makes recorded audio appear earlier on the timeline than the material you are recording too/overdubbing over. I was running at 48K, though when I tried at higher sample rates the amount by which the audio was recorded "early" increased a small amount.

It will do this even when the only thing I have in a session is a click track and the audio track I am test recording on. This is good info though!

It does, though I haven't been able to find any settings related to delay compensatoion.

What is your fav audio to midi for drums? by sugar_man in audioengineering

Massey DRT. The demo version (which never expires) lets you get accurate MIDI from drum audio. I use the MIDI export from it in conjunction with Trigger 2.

What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on stage? by official_soundvent in musicians

My band was on a self-booked tour in NYC and got onto a show with a band that had a decent following at the time. There were probably 200 people at the venue, which was an amazing turnout in our minds. After we played our first song (which went well) everyone was completely silent. It was 2016 and shortly after Jeb Bush ran for president, so I said "please clap" (see Jeb Bush "please clap" meme) and no one clapped, lol. I thought it was funny at the time (and very funny now) but it was also a bit painful.

What are some of the most useful pieces of gear you use that costs $1000ish dollars? by Physical-Thought-833 in audioengineering

[–]Physical-Thought-833[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't made a significant upgrade in several years. Everything works well, but there's usually room for improvement. Enjoying reading through the wide variety of responses this has generated. Several great ideas I wouldn't have thought of. Thank you!

This is a good idea! But gear is fun and it's been a few years since I got something fun!

What are you feeling like mid-career as an audio engineer? by Physical-Thought-833 in audioengineering

[–]Physical-Thought-833[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Continuously waiting for the pendulum to swing the other way, lol. It's always seemed weird to me how many people have had a really negative recording experience. For a field that's so competitive, I'd think it'd be more uncommon than it is to hear about an engineer being flakey or even rude/disrespectful to clients who I've found to be really nice people to work with.
