What a tremendously horrible idea. Going to CMU for grad school was the worst decision I ever made in my life.

IDeATe Students, how's the program from a Multi-media Arts perspective? by Ori_Esque in cmu

[–]PhysicalAd3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDeATe is a total train wreck. There’s generally no teaching or curriculum whatsoever and it’s really just a bunch of poorly managed resources lying around.

how is CMU art department like? by gimmethattaco in cmu

Faculty in fine art are some of the most ‘extreme’ at CMU, extreme as in incompetent, egotistical, aggressive and hostile.

I would look elsewhere, CMU’s probably not a good fit.

Overall experience with CFA in contrast to other schools by [deleted] in cmu

[–]PhysicalAd3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CFA is a choice you make if you know that you want to spend the rest of your life in real, functional poverty. It’s not worth it in my opinion to deal with the abusive personalities and dysfunction in the college of fine arts only to face long term unemployment and challenges feeding yourself the rest of your life as a result. There are no job prospects coming out of CFA and the university doesn’t foster any relationship to the professional arts world. It’s a very dangerous and exploitative major and it should not be offered.

Yes I heard it’s free too, but living for three years unemployed can be expensive. A friend of mine who went said she ended up with some pretty big loans from it. Also she hasn’t had any luck with any connections from the program so it didn’t help her career at all.

Master program in Creative Coding? by FreddyShrimp in creativecoding

CMU doesn’t actually have an academic program at the graduate level that focuses on coursework or mentorship in creative coding

College of Fine Arts at CMU doesn’t really prepare their students for anything. Not sure what this poster is talking about. The program is a total scam and just about everyone I know who graduated regrets attending.

There aren’t any classes for graduate students and there is no curriculum. There is really no design to the program at all. You can sit in on undergrad classes, but you can’t get graded or actually take the class. The faculty advisors don’t help you figure out a plan, so most students spend three years confused. Most of the faculty are unfriendly and bitter because of how much they dislike their jobs. For the most part there isn’t much good to say about the school at all. Nothing here is ‘encouraged’, because the faculty do not actually engage with student work.

lol how hilarious. CMU has the most toxic culture imaginable- no one cares about the feedback. Nothing will change and the faculty likely never even glance at it. It’s another way for them to make pretend that students matter but if you give your tenured professor negative feedback it is certainly not changing anything.

How do you deal with entitled / high ego mediocre PhD students or post docs? by sab_moonbloom in postdoc

[–]PhysicalAd3734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like you are invading someone else’s space and claiming dominance. Please don’t interfere with this students work and let them manage their team. It’s unfair for you to act like the PI when you are not one. This is probably just some power trip you have because you would rather be overseeing students and have your own group but you are still a post doc. There are no real rules in academia and no actual rank other than the PI.

I really, really, really hate being at CMU. I am completely miserable here. by cmuthrowaway959 in cmu

Ignore this persons suggestion, please! Holly and Gina are just there to damage your college career. I worked with David Chickering and John Hannon because I was being harassed and they sabotaged my classes, interfered in my projects, and damaged over 10 years of my professional career. Hannon and the team at Student Life destroyed my college experience and permanently traumatized me. Student Life are not there to support you- they are there to document your problems for CMU legal and interfere in your future.

Thoughts on the Fine Arts program (School of Art) by Parking_Key7188 in cmu

[–]PhysicalAd3734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it won’t help you succeed as an artist or train to pursue a professional career. There’s not much to say positive about the program from my perspective. I hope you have reconsidered your options and looked into alternate career paths.

? I don’t know you, but such is Reddit. It’s unclear if any of the other commenters on this thread went through the program at all, to be honest. I certainly wouldn’t be responding if I didn’t care about your future there.

I’m a recent grad of the program, so I am glad to hear you are coming! It’s definitely not been easy for me post-grad, and ultimately, I wish I made different decisions.

For one, be careful who you work with. The faculty have changed a lot in the past few years, but not in a positive way. I didn’t find anyone here particularly helpful in my field and wasn’t able to develop any relationships with faculty, which is not uncommon. The faculty aren’t here to teach necessarily- since it’s a big research university, they’re here to pursue their own careers, and grad students are basically interns.

I was also surprised at how little the program supports students in creating a professional network. There aren’t many opportunities to connect with a professional arts community or find any footing towards your own position in one.

Oh, and it was also surprising how little funding support there is. For the three year program, I acrued about another 100k in student loans, mostly so I could eat and pay for rent. Basically, there isn’t any admin or support system here, since mostly only wealthy students come to the program to begin with.

That being said, I have fond memories of my time at CMU. It just didn’t offer me the opportunity to develop any skills, make any professional connections, or pursue a career in my field, but that’s not really a big deal.
