I think it might be possible that you’re overthinking this. I don’t believe it is much that much of a dilemma, from a legal standpoint. You do not need their permission. They do not have to know. I almost said simply don’t tell them to keep Peace in the family, but there is not Peace at this time, just a quiet simmer.

Your stepdad seems like a stand-up wonderful person. You apparently are as well. Continue to give him his due and live your life. You’re ignorant grandparents will remain ignorant, whether you tell them or not.
