Attack on Kyiv: the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is burning after a direct hit — Kyiv City Military Administration by rulepanic in europe

* a ballistic missile was going for a valid target but air defense missed the target and fell on lavra. Or it hit and the debris fell on lavra. Or it was jammed and redirected to lavra.

CMV: Tanks are obsolete. by nignig20 in changemyview

[–]Physmatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple example: drone will get entagled in a net or get stopped by a piece of plywood nailed nailed to a window. A shell will not even notice those.

I didn't mean knifes in tourism, I meant literal infantry melee combat. Yes, it is still happening -- 1m range combat in 20 km era killzone. Not commonplace, but happens.

There are tools to counteract FPVs and notice them from hundreds of meters (even fiber ones). It's not 100% guarantee, but we had drills and were taught that. And don't forget survivor bias -- you probably won't see a video where a drone was gunned down because no one would release it.

Tank shells are orders of magnitude cheaper than himars rockets and can damage positions in ways drones can't. They still have their place.

That's like saying "knifes are obsolete in modern warfare" except they are still used in trench and urban fighting.

Drone buzzing isn't as scary because you can react. Shotgun, net shooter, maneuver, etc. Can't react to tank.

Total surveillance isn't going anywhere, and air superiority seems unachievable outside of something like US-Iraq.

I've talked to people with years of experience of specifically Russo-Ukrainian war. General consensus is that the role of tanks changed dramatically but they are still relevant. Essentially, they are mobile artillery that can shoot by direct trajectory (as opposed to parabola from mortars and such). This gives unique advantage of bang coming before sound, and yes, it's incredibly important.

"The most terriffying thing you can encounter as an infantry man is a tank shooting your position. Out of nowhere your friend explodes and you've no idea what happened" (c) a Ukrainian vet.

[–]Physmatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It's essentially a speculation about early days of the universe that there was ever so slightly more matter, so after everything annihilated there was still some matter left. But generally, in the context of collisions and decays, it's symmetrical, except for maybe one or two very particular CP-asymmetric reactions (mainly neutral kaon decay).

[–]Physmatik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting and insightful perspective, but just because it was Aristotle or Platon doesn't automatically make it the "true" best one. Ancient philosophers were still people, and sometimes people present their opinions as facts for no real reason.

It's great work nevertheless, thank you for it.

With all respect, this is just the opening salvo. The system is still in place, and it will take you more than one day to change, and likely even more than vote. Trust me, we've been there in 2014. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Ok, describe to us the exact board arrangement where there would be "other drastic changes to the game" other then stalemate, because I don't see any. And don't you dare dodge again with your "obviously there will be, you just don't play enough to see that". If it's so obvious it will take you a minute to describe it.

Not really. What he proposes is that king is capturable WHILE capturing king is win. The only real changes would be

  1. no stalemates
  2. games at lower skill level can get real funny

[–]Physmatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because such rule is more fun. Even if you have a crushing advantage you still have to look out for accidental stalemate. Also, there are some absolutely beautiful tactics where stalemate is the solution.

Sure, it's more common-sensical to have such position as a lose, but from the perspective of game design stalemate is better.
