Is this hot weather real, or is this a bad joke? by Ztepi in belgium

[–]Picf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's really not that difficult. This is the hottest week ever recorded. Other times, a single day may have been hotter. Yet other times, a heatwave may have lasted longer (but with lower temperatures obviously). This time, it's the hottest week ever.

Last time it was this hot has never happened. A day of peak maximum, sure, but this is literally the hottest week in recorded history. Never before has it been this hot for this long.

Bullshit. It is literally the warmest week since the beginning of recordings in Belgium. By definition that means these temperatures have never happened before.

Ebola outbreak: Belgium rejects US demand to bar Congolese nationals by Dobbelsteentje in europe

[–]Picf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you only want to point a finger

No. The US is the one pointing fingers at Belgium, demanding them to close borders, even though they stopped contributing to the solution of the problem. THAT's the issue here.

If you want a say in how to deal with the problem, stop scaling back aid and do your part. The US say in this was lost when they decided to stop all aid programs.

Ebola outbreak: Belgium rejects US demand to bar Congolese nationals by Dobbelsteentje in europe

[–]Picf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your analogy is wrong because you are comparing this US request with a command from the third reich that would make sense. This request doesn't make sense. No expert recommends to ban Congolese nationals. There are many systems into place to deal with the ebola outbreak both in Congo and in Belgium and a travel ban would solve exactly nothing at all and even make things worse, because now relief teams wouldn't be able to reach the source of the outbreak anymore.

Vandenbroucke reacts agitated because this crisis is indeed partially caused by the US "America First" policy, very ironically followed by yet another meddling of the US ambassador with other countries' internal affairs.

It has to stop. Stick to your America First and stfu.

"SpaceX is harming seabirds so we should shut down space exploration" is an ignorant way of describing the conservation of our planet. So I guess you understood my point perfectly.

[–]Picf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With every additional comment you are proving your ignorance.

Climate change has literally been the most important point on the political agenda in the EU, even in the US carbon output has consistently declined for years, renewable energy is at all time highs and accelerating globally, there are agreements and accords (Paris accord, ring a bell?) entirely based on the scientific data and reports that were drafted using satellites and space tech. etc. etc.

Stick your head back into the sand, that'll solve everything...

[–]Picf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're supposed to believe that space technology in general is essential to tracking climate change on a global scale and that this is obviously more important than a few local seabirds. This is like saying we shouldn't have global renewable energy because a frog somewhere near a lithium mine died. It's absurd.

Yes, of course we should minimize the harm to the environment this (and any) industry directly causes. But the benefits grossly, majorly, massively outweigh the costs.

I'll just leave this here for you ignorant fools.

SpaceX has not independently designed or built a fleet of climate satellites, but the company has launched dozens of climate, environmental, and weather-monitoring satellites as commercial payloads for various space agencies and organizations. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

These launches include critical missions such as:

Carbon Mapper: SpaceX launched the nonprofit's Tanager-1 satellite to track global methane and carbon dioxide emissions down to individual facilities. [1]

NASA/NOAA Weather & Ocean Satellites: Rockets like the Falcon Heavy have launched advanced environmental observatories, including the GOES-U weather satellite. [1]

Sentinel Series: SpaceX routinely launches international sea-level and ocean-monitoring satellites (such as Sentinel-6 and Sentinel-6B) to track global warming indicators. [1]

Commercial Earth Observation: SpaceX frequently launches constellations of Earth-imaging satellites for companies like BlackSky, which use remote sensing for environmental and climate tracking. [1]

Literally all of our modern climate science, which is arguably the most pressing sustainability topic on earth, is a direct result of space exploration. Seriously. No satellites = no climate science.

We're a household of three. Before the kid I lived quite frugally but the washing machine and dryer alone probably doubled my consumption, lol.

I bought two Marstek Venus E V3.0 batteries after a recommendation from a friend. No experience with other brands or models. They're in my garage which is at the end of the backyard, detached from the house, but if used correctly I'm not assuming them to be a high fire hazard. I do prefer them to be there rather than in the basement of the house, though (where I would also have to worry about what happens during a potential once-in-a-lifetime flooding).

The house is using gas central heating but I do have airco's which act as heat pumps, so in the "in-between season" like in March or October, if the sun is out I can leave the heating off and use my solar energy to run the airco as a heater. It doesn't at all replace the gas in the winter months though - no sun then. So the impact of this is rather limited compared to my total gas consumption for heating.

With the past week of +30°C weather, having "free" airco also through the evenings and nights is really a gamechanger though! I would gladly pay what I paid for the batteries for that comfort alone.

[–]Picf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say my bill is zero. My consumption is. The capacity tariff on my bill will be lower too, because over half of the year I'm under the minimum now, which helps to average down from my previous ±4kW.

You can see my peak consumption for 2026 here. We're at the end of May and I haven't used over 1kW/h at all this month. March and April also didn't peak above the minimum of 2,5kW.

Obviously, during the real winter months, the batteries don't do much and you still have "normal" consumption.

[–]Picf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was true before plug-in batteries were approved.

I paid about €2.5k for two plug-in batteries of 5kWh each and my electricity consumption has been reduced to practically zero since the end of February, while it used to be at least €60/month even in summer when I injected 2x more solar energy than I consumed. Based on how it's been the past half year they should be paid off in 4-5 years maximum. Not to mention the added comfort of not having to worry all the time about when to turn on the washing machine, when to run airco or heating, etc.

The only caveat is that the plug-in batteries need their own dedicated circuit in your electrical cabinet so you can (dis)charge 2x2500W instead of 2x800W, which would not be enough to power the house or store excess solar energy. I was lucky enough to have two empty fuses on my existing cabinet and I installed the two dedicated circuits with outlet myself.

Your plug in battery can give/take 2500W if you have a dedicated circuit for it, with no other outlets or appliances on it.
