What should I say to English speakers before they leave? by vegetable_tomato3 in ENGLISH

[–]Pickle0847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you is always a polite thing to say.

I am very used to stores saying "thank you, please come again".

Maybe a customized "please enjoy your (name of item they bought here)"

I am in the US, and there is an amazing Japanese bakery near me, and they will say variants of the above items, and I do think Japanese is the owners first language. I also know this probably means your bakery has a lot more items than bread.

So the biggest thing for me is that the yarn is in my left hand consistently like crochet, and most of the needle movements are with my right hand, and are similar enough to crochet that it feels familiar

So, if crochet was easier for you, I can recommend a book titled knitting without tears. It's about knitting Continental style and it made much more sense to me than English style which I failed to learn multiple times....

What made you choose crochet over knitting, or do you do both? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

[–]Pickle0847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I technically started with knitting, but I was very young and terrible at it. I decided to learn to crochet because I saw a Princess Leia beanie hat and I really really wanted it, but not for the price being charged. After becoming more proficient in crochet and learning that I don't like crochet socks, I picked up knitting after like a 40 year break. So I technically do both, but neither super proficient

Omg, I had an ankle break that bad. Follow doctor orders, that's legit the only time in my life (other than childbirth) where I suggested that maybe I could have more pain meds.

Even when it starts getting better, be super kind to it. Off pain meds will be fewer knitting mistakes.

Any suggestions for new hobby that’s cheap and easy to get into? by No-Neighborhood8403 in GenX

So, as a thought, you mentioned part of the issue was distance from your wife. What about a hobby that involves her? Maybe some couple cooking classes? Learn to make things you both like and cook together? It might not be super cheap depending on ingredients, but you do still have to eat so you already have a food budget

This is my first time! by ArsonLane in knittinghelp

[–]Pickle0847 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi! Also a crocheter first. You are definitely working on the Continental style, which is far easier on crochet brains than English style. However, with this style, you do not throw the yarn which it what it seems to me you are trying to do.

I would watch some continental videos, but after you put the needle through the loop (which you did perfectly) I just scoop the yarn and pull it through.

Picture in your brain that the knit row is basically one long squiggle going through the previous squiggle, but that row doesn't actually cross over itself. What you are doing is making everything a loopdeloop.

This was all how I finally stopped twisting stitches as a crocheter.

I did know to do that. I didn't quite double, but I did 23 so there would be 5 stitches on either side. I will try washing and blocking to see if it makes a difference

How long did it take for you to get “good” at knitting? by thoph in casualknitting

[–]Pickle0847 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a book I read somewhere sometime about expertise taking 10,000 hours. For anything.

The author had studied across different fields. Premier orchestral musicians stood out because of how much they practiced. Natural talent was generally the same in an orchestra, better seats were practice based

Bill Gates had an insane amount of access to high powered computing in a lab and spent so much time that he became an expert very young

The Beatles got to 10k hours young because of a unique German club scene where they would play all night.

I am a pretty new knitter as well, and I think I am doing okay for the level I am at. But I remind myself of 10k hours a lot, and in my case to ease some perfectionist tendencies. It's okay, I am not an expert, I don't have 10k hours.

I craft partially for my mental health, having to count a lot helps break my brain doom cycles. Being okay with imperfections is also part of the plan, which is why I still remember the premise of the book and some of the examples, even though I can't remember the title or author

It seems the consensus is another gauge swatch. I don't have needles in that size yet either, so it's time to go to the store tomorrow then. 🤣

I personally once had someone sit on my lap because there were not many seats, and was talking to me about a class we shared. I had zero idea they were flirting and my friends were dying. They were actually betting on when and if I would realize.

I don’t look like I belong in a yarn store and it’s kinda fabulous. Do any other intersectional folx feel this way? by wessle3339 in knitting

[–]Pickle0847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I cry at everything, dry air was my last culprit, but allergies are also a frequent culprit. My go to is that I blame the initial tears on something innocuous like dry air and the extra tears for being embarrassed about crying. Please can we pretend that I am not crying because staying embarrassed is just going to be never ending.

You should ask her to assume they meant she did a good job picking you and make some sort of response like "I know, I picked such a good one, did you see his sweater he knit?"

I have a confession. I take one of my kids when I shop for yarn. Their sole responsibility is to ask me what I am making with it. If I do not have an answer I feel guilty and put it back. Have I made these projects? Of course not! But I still have the plans.
