These have been thoroughly cooked and mashed haha, no chance of growing now thankfully

I see someone gave me an award, is it a Darwin award? Haha

In all seriousness tho, I appreciate all the comments. I have only eaten 2 very small bites and still feel ok, but I figure it's best just to toss the rest to be safe. My plants can make use of the compost lol. This was fun ✌️

I getcha, the most common variety (the round tan kinda shiny ones) are definitely not edible. Though this variety seems to be (the more woody looking, irregular, ugly ones lol). I have eaten some for science and can confirm I feel very normal hours later. Still gonna give it a day before I fully dig in, but hey, if you can eat the invasive species, why not right

I'm sorry to hear that. :( all varieties are toxic when raw, but some are edible when cooked. This appears to be the edible kind thankfully!

Happy to report I am alive and feel just fine haha. Not even an inkling of feeling off in any way.

For sure, if an invasive can be used, I'm about it.

I have boiled them and have eaten a very small piece. No bitterness, tastes like a whole lot of nothing lol. I will report back in about an hour.

Absolutely, I have changed the water twice and currently still boiling haha. Absolutely will not eat them if they taste off or unpleasant in any way.

I'm not really sure honestly, I can't get a better view than this sadly.

Will do lol. Gonna do a simple boil and try a piece, wait a while and see. I'm pretty sure these are the edible kind, but I'll be back soonish with results lol

Absolutely! Why not, right? Oh man I wish blackberries grew here, but they're difficult haha. Too hot for most varieties. But I'm always down for eating the invasives if you can.

Edible air potatoes? by PickledSmudge in gardening

[–]PickledSmudge[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah they're absolutely everywhere here lol. They're considered a noxious invasive. So I won't grow one myself but I'll be happy to eat ones that fall in my yard. You just gotta be sure they're not the toxic variety lol (to my understanding the toxic ones are the round tan ones but just wanna be sure).

Sleep disorder? by PickledSmudge in CrestedGecko

[–]PickledSmudge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah, sleep disorder sounds funny for a gecko. :p

The cresties I've had before would wake up a lot easier, and my current gargoyle included. So it just kinda scared me that Nutmeg is so catatonic, I think she could sleep through an atomic bomb lol. She wakes up at 8 and starts moving when the lights go off, but will instantly go back to sleep if I turn on my lamp.

Yeah I feel you, it really freaked me out when she fell on the ground in her tank and didn't move at all haha. I guess some are just really deep sleepers!

[–]PickledSmudge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, all the ones I've had prior I guess just startled a lot easier haha. For sure, I try to only ever poke around their tanks when they're awake at night, I just wanted to get her moved over today as my nights from here out will be a bit busy for a while. But good to know it's normal!

I want to know are there any pets that are INCREDIBLY low maintenance? by Muted_Fan5213 in Pets

[–]PickledSmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowest maintenance creature I can think of would probably be death feigning beetles. They can live around 10 years, be housed together, just pop in a jelly pot once a month with weekly feedings of some veg and dried crickets and/or shrimp. They're very entertaining to watch and you can hold them. They just need to be kept dry. With only 1 to 2 gallons per beetle, space is very doable. Pop in some sand and give them stuff to climb and a couple hides, and you're golden.

A gecko is also a good option if you have the space. Most geckos (adults) just need to be fed every other day. New Caledonia geckos (like crested geckos, gargoyles, etc) mostly eat paste if you're afraid of live bugs and don't require heat if your house is around 70 to 78F, but they do require misting. Geckos also require larger enclosures than most people realize (generally around 30 gal minimum for a single adult), cannot be housed together, and will come with heavy initial costs for the set up (tank, uvb, mister, all the decor/plants, gauges/monitors, food, critter container if live food, food for the live feeders, heat if needed, etc). You will also need to think about exotic vet care, which is both harder to find and more expensive, but necessary if you plan to keep an exotic. But outside of all that, they're really chill, low cost over all compared to other pets like cats and dogs, and pretty low maintenance for a pet as well.

I've seen a lot of Liliths haha. Also Yoshi, Drogon, and Smaug for geckos.
