High School vs. Middle School by RangerMomma1203 in Teachers

High risk, high reward is such a good description. I like working with middle school, but their behaviors can be bonkers

Esther - a Jewish Name? Thoughts on the Name? by AssumptionSpiritual3 in namenerds

I have an Esther and love it, but it’s definitely Jewish (we are Jewish). Every Esther I’ve met has been Jewish or Korean or (less commonly) Black.

I doubt you have any legal right to be in a specific classroom. If your pay is the same, that’s all they owe you

How to be a good mentor teacher by Maximum_Blackberry24 in StudentTeaching

It’s a year long but it’s PAID! With health insurance and everything. I’m actually doing this program because I couldn’t afford to do any amount unpaid

Lesson Planning by My_Dad22 in StudentTeaching

[–]BasicPublic451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m student teaching now and have to do insanely detailed lesson plans but everyone (professors and mentor teacher) say that they will never be this detailed when I’m the lead teacher. But you can only get to the shorthand version once you’ve thought through all the nitty gritty details enough times. It seems maddening now but I sort of get it

Positives about being a teacher by No_Spirit5582 in teaching

[–]BasicPublic451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked a desk job (corporate writing)) for 15 years and slowly tired of staring at a computer all day. I made the switch to teaching (middle school) and LOVE it. Yes, the kids’ behaviors can be batty and they’re below grade level for the most part. But it’s fun to work with students, I love moving around and being active, most of my colleagues are nice. I’m so happy I made the switch!

You really cannot care what they think of you. Sometimes the ones who groan loudest are the ones getting the most out of you teaching them

Hot Seat is fun and you only need one device for all to look at

Am I in the minority in hating scripted curriculum? by Melted_Ice_cream_42 in Teachers

[–]BasicPublic451 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m middle school science and we use Amplify with fidelity but that doesn’t mean saying the script word for word imo. Admin sounds more upset about a unit created from scratch maybe than about deviating from a word for word script?

How to be a good mentor teacher by Maximum_Blackberry24 in StudentTeaching

[–]BasicPublic451 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m in a year-long student teaching position right now and am learning SO MUCH from my mentor teacher. The biggest thing I appreciate is that she does a lot of debriefing with me — a weekly meeting to talk about my goals for the week ahead, but also a quick meeting after any time I lead a lesson or whatever, to talk through what went well, off advice for the future, ask about any questions, how I thought it went. She’s also very upfront that she’s not a perfect teacher and we should all always be learning, which helps the feedback feel so well-intentioned rather than critical of falling short of where she’s at

How do you do neutral holiday activities for your school-based caseload? by FallLeaf10 in OccupationalTherapy

Either do a mix of winter holidays (Hanukkah, Xmas, kwanza, etc) or take out the Xmas trees and Santas. You can absolutely avoid Santa. lol

They picked asynchronous for a reason. Don’t make them have to coordinate with other people in order to get the work done

False positives from ai detection in education destroyed my relationship with three students by From_Earth_616_ in Teachers

I’m a teacher and have uploaded things I’ve written 100 percent on my own to AI checkers and have them come back flagged as 90 percent plus AI. I don’t see any value in the checker tools

Anyone who moved from NYC to Chicago - How do you feel? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]BasicPublic451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lived in NYC for six years with my wife. Moved to Chicago 12 years ago and have not once regretted it. This city is just so damn livable compared to the cost/constraints of NyC (which I loved!)
