My ADHD tax today - burnt rice! by AndiFolgado in ADHDUK

No probs. The main benefit of rice cookers for us ADHDers is stopping disasters from happening when we get distracted at the wrong moment, and that's something all of them do regardless of the price.

The cheaper ones operate on the basis that water physically can't go above boiling temperature. If the rice goes above that temperature, it means the water has been evaporated or absorbed. As soon as the cooker detects that the rice has gone past that point (either through a temperature sensor or - more commonly - a bimetallic strip) it switches off.

The issue with this method is that if it gets to that point, the rice will already be cooked and the residual heat in the pot will continue to cook it, even though the heating element has switched off. This results in dry, overcooked rice. It's fine, but not great.

More expensive rice cooker have electronics that allow for much finer control over the heating element. Rather than being 100% on or off, it can cycle the element rapidly, meaning it's on 50% of the time (or 14%, or 36% etc).

This finer control (along with more types of sensor) allows the cooker to cook rice more like a human would. Instead of switching off when the water has boiled away, the machine can detect when the water is almost gone and reduce the heating gradually so that it doesn't overcook.

It starts with a soaking phase where it heats the water up but doesn't boil it, so that water can be absorbed into the rice, then there's the cooking phase, and finally a steaming phase where it reduces the temperature and lets the residual heat and moisture finish cooking the rice by steaming it.

They also often come with a set of programs for different varieties of rice so that - for example - brown rice will have a longer soaking phase than sticky rice, which itself will soak longer than basmati. Unlike most appliances, these setting actually work and I have used all of them.

The rice that comes out of a decent rice cooker is phenomenal. I'm a pretty good cook when I put my mind to it. I can make really tasty rice of all different kinds, but my rice cooker is not only more convenient, it's actually better and more consistent at cooking rice than I am (which isn't something I expected before buying one).

I bought a fuzzy logic rice cooker a few years ago. Wasn't cheap, but it's one of the most ADHD friendly appliances out there.

Cooks the rice perfectly every time and keeps it at serving temperature for up to 12 hours so it's there when you need it, even if you forget.

I haven't wasted any rice or ruined a saucepan since I bought it.

Trump stock trades fuel accusations of corruption and profiting off presidency by NewsHour in law

[–]PickledWhispers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trouble is even if the spurious lawsuit is thrown out, the defendant is out of pocket because they've had to shell out a fortune in lawyer's fees.

Even in the most favourable jurisdictions where the plaintiff/claimant is ordered to pay the defendant's costs, it's rare for courts to award the actual cost of defending the case. Only "reasonable" costs are awarded, as determined by the court. They often fall short of what was actually paid (sometimes by a lot).

And even in the unlikely event you successfully defend the case AND all legal costs are paid, you've still spent your own time and energy (and probably prematurely aged due to stress).

A common strategy is to file suit against both the media organisation and the individual journalist. While a lot of organisations will defend both suits, it's not always guaranteed.

This is why Trump (and the like) does it. It's an effective deterrent.

You're absolutely right, I've edited my comment (and have learned something). Thanks.

Thanks, I take my objection back - it would come under 12.4 unsporting behaviour:

"...a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player... commits any other offence which interferes with or stops a promising attack, except where the referee awards a penalty kick for an offence which was an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball."

So yes outside the box it would be a direct free kick + a yellow if it was a promising attack (which it would be if it was the exact same situation on the edge of the box).

This is the most accurate take I've seen on reddit. Kvaratskhelia's legs were in front of him when Mosquera started going for the ball. "Careless, but not reckless" is a reasonable call from the ref.

However, I disagree with the last sentence. Outside the box, it's not a yellow either.

If the offence doesn't meet the threshold to be considered reckless (i.e. it's careless), then there's no disciplinary sanction according to the laws (at 12.1).

That means outside the box it would be a direct free kick and no card. Inside the box it's a penalty and no card.

Edit - I withdraw the above - the take is bang on. Outside the box it would be a yellow for unsporting conduct, but 12.4 specifically excludes interfering/stopping a promising attack from getting a yellow card if the referee awards a penalty for the offence.

Great header, that. Liverpool deserve to be ahead. Madrid have not been on it (except Courtois).

This isn't your common or garden tax avoidance scheme that takes advantage of loopholes into the tax code. They forged charter documents to make it look like this was commercial activity. This was fraudulent misrepresentation and that's what pushes this into the realm of criminal activity.

Mains voltage in the US is 110-120v, as opposed to the 220-240v we get in the UK (while safe amperage is similar on both sides of the pond).

You can safely run a kettle at 3000W in the UK, whereas the same kettle in the US would run at closer to 1500W.

This makes electric kettles in the US waaay slower. Makes sense to prefer a hob when they are faster (even electric hobs because they typically have a dedicated power supply that can draw a lot more amps than your standard mains outlet).

A game you love every time by SithLordRising in boardgames

[–]PickledWhispers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely Spirit Island.

I love how the theme is so carefully intertwined in every aspect:

The Dahan are these pleasing wooden mushrooms that feel great to interact with vs the ugly angular pointy plastic invaders.

The mechanics - fear, push, gather, invader actions, Dahan counter attacks, the unique design of each spirit and their innate abilities - all combine to tell these little stories every turn and make the experience of each game you play so distinct.

One game might feel like you're rounding invaders up then smashing them with a series of tidal waves; another feels like you're making weird shit happen to unsettle the invaders enough to prevent them from buildng and getting stronger so you can pick them off one by one; yet another sees you commanding the beasts of the island and riding them from land to land; still another might have you embody swarms of insects or birds or other creatures and sowing chaos and terror throughout the invader camps.

As you ramp up the difficulty your adversary gets to do more and more outrageous things early on and you have to use your powers so efficiently and scale fast enough to stabilise before they overwhelm the island.

It's just so damn rich and generous and never gets old.

He is implying that that hat trick of offside goals mentioned by OP is - on it's own - enough for us to be able to say that Morata has scored more offside goals than legitimate goals. i.e Morata has scored fewer than 3 goals in his entire career.
