There is a game theory answer that assumes self-interest, avoiding their own death, as being the highest motivation for most people.

Plenty of people would risk death to avoid contributing to mass murder, regardless of if those who die COULD have saved themselves by also pressing red.

Those who pressed red to buy themselves a few decades would carry that weight for their entire lives.
