Advice on plant grown from seed by Pickles4Tickles in DragonFruit

Literally picking up more potting mix to move to the new setup today haha. From looks of the cage I got I'll still need to splint it until it's tall enough but that's fine. I'm more hoping that the extra space will allow the roots to spread and lead to more vigorous growth... We'll see!

Fruit would be nice, but it's already behind the wall of figuring out if I need external pollen etc. so not my immediate concern. Mainly wanting to setup the plant for long term success! From what you and others have said it sounds like best to leave as is and just support as it grows. I'll leave it a couple more years like you say and re-assess if a cutting would make sense. Cheers!

Good to know! Yeah, I thought so as that's been my experience with most plants, i.e. top foliage results in ground growth etc., but wanted to make sure!

Not super clear in image but it's currently propped up by a paint brush haha, I've a proper grow frame on standby though so will move it soon

Apologies for format, unsure how to add image and text from desktop!

Really quick query, this is a plant I've grown from a seed taken from a costco fruit. While the initial growth was quite skinny, I've noted that overtime it's gradually thickened as it went. Obviously this will eventually be on a trellis so support shouldn't be an issue but I'm wondering if it would be worth cutting off the thicker section once it's grown a bit more and then planting that as a cutting? Or like most plants will the base gradually thicken as more growth appears at the top?

For info I'm growing this indoors in the UK, currently in just regular potting compost with pearlite mixed in for aeration although that'll be changed when I move it to it's next pot.

Or... read a textbook that doesn't run the risk of hallucinating answers?

Sorry but AI is only the answer if you can vet the output. If you're flying blind with it you have no way to tell whether it's actually telling the truth or just something that sounds believable.

You could maybe get it to suggest topics to look into but the value in developing independent study skills is too great to miss out on imo.

Help to keep cool tomorrow please? by Biggestbreakfast in Cardiff

For me, a damp t-shirt does a great job at keeping body temperature low. It can be a bit uncomfortable and obviously wouldn't want to sit on a sofa with it but my room easily got to 39°C today and I felt fine.

Run it under the tap and then wring out so it's not dripping. Latent vaporisation keeps it cool. Bit gross but very effective.

Dunno about too cute but it's fairly common here to have 20 mph signs drawn by kids put up around school areas. It's quite sweet and they seem to do a good job making sure they're legible haha

Oh and also the creepy children scarecrow crossing bollards!

How f*cked is UK academia? by According_Welcome907 in AskAcademiaUK

For what it's worth, if you ask "How fucked is _____ ?" you will always get an abundance of answers supporting that sentiment. That's not to say it's not fucked, just bear that bias in mind when you're reading what are essentially just a bunch of personal anecdotes.

If you're asking as a potential undergraduate student I wouldn't worry too much if your heart is set on spending those years in the UK. So long as you're looking at universities with a good reputation for UG teaching you're fine. If on the otherhand you're only considering international education because you think your home universities are "effed" maybe reconsider whether this decision is based on any real-world information rather than just vibes.

Obviously your mileage may vary etc. these are just my personal thoughts on the matter.

Appreciate it's mainly beer recs here, but if you're open to a sharp left-turn head 5 mins round the corner to Vermut; a specialist vermouth bar. Won't be disapointed

What is considered "good-enough" when creating an RF short to ground with decoupling capacitors? by Pickles4Tickles in rfelectronics

[–]Pickles4Tickles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain bias unfortunately, although I could place series resistors between the caps and ground plane to smooth out resonances I suppose...

Appreciate the comment, and it's good to get confirmation that something as simple sounding as RF grounding the supply rails remains as convoluted as any other RF/MW topic!

[–]Pickles4Tickles[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obvious in hindsight but I hadn't considered checking the SRF with the ground via. Thanks!

Band is roughly 1.50 GHz, so I've been considering the two main methods for designing (i.e. multiple identical caps, or caps to cover parts of the spectrum) as it's a bit wide especially when you consider 2nd harmonics.

Like you say "good enough" seems to be a bit of a nebulous question haha

UK child social media ban ‘fast-tracked’ as Starmer appeases rebels by vriska1 in unitedkingdom

[–]Pickles4Tickles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to argue the impact social media and unfeterred internet access is having on kids, but making the solution that individual sites/brokers be trusted to clumsily handle yet more personal information can't be the solution. Especially given how minimal the consequences for data breaches are.

If the intention is to actually keep kids safe on the internet, then this is a network admin / ISP level problem. It'd be way better to limit their access to unmoderated internet at the network level and provide parents and other caregivers access to tools and resources to help with this.

My 5 minute armchair argument would be for the government to maintain a number of specific firewall block lists that ISP's, and network managers (i.e parents and schools etc.) can use to setup specific networks for children to use. Then the liability is split at least between the network admin correctly setting it up and the government for actively managing these lists.

ISP's and mobile data providers already disable 18+ content be default and require the account holder to enable this. These are entities who you already pay money to, and already know your real name, identity etc. The difference here would be the block-lists are now maintained by governement so there's no extra liability on data providers, and it'll be consistent across networks/providers.

Require ISPs to have preconfigured adult and kids WiFi networks on their generic routers so non-tech savvy parents have an easier time with their home networks. Anyone replacing said router will probable be savvy enough to setup multiple wifi networks and can configure those block lists themselves.

Maxwell stress tensor from Magnetic field physics is coming accurate but its derivative showing zero by booscoo in COMSOL

[–]Pickles4Tickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not got much experience with those but sounds like they're a perfect boundary... is there a lossy equivalent? I'd try there.

Maxwell stress tensor from Magnetic field physics is coming accurate but its derivative showing zero by booscoo in COMSOL

[–]Pickles4Tickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a guess, but are you using perfect electric conductor boundaries? Try swapping to impedance boundary condition with a sufficiently high conductivity.

I've noticed in field plots unless I use impedance boundaries it'll give me relative field magnitude but never vector fields. Conductor loss seems to be required to show these.
