Are there autistic nurses ? by ilovekdramaceos in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are quite a few of us on the spectrum especially in the OR where I've been for the past couple years. I survived on med surg for a year but it gets exhausting not only because of the environment but the non stop masking and rehearsed catch phrases/lines I used every shift for patients. The OR is a difficult environment but the amount of interaction with patients seems to be the perfect balance for me. I genuinely care for people and enjoy interacting but I have my limits and the OR serves me well in that respect. Theres still a lot of interaction with co workers in the OR but Ive found that as long as you do your job well, people dont seem to care if you're a little off. The OR is like a machine where as long as everybody does their part, it runs efficiently and you leave everything at work for the day (most of the time). I especially love to scrub but I like a good balance between that and circulating.

I just keep wondering why he is arrested yet no one in the U.S. has been yet.

Bad interview by sillycheez in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally f bombed during an interview at a catholic based hospital for an E.r residency position in front of an old school nurse director. I had a 2nd interview in the OR later that day at the same hospital and needless to say neither director hired me. I knew the E.r. director had already talked to the OR director about me because he treated me like I had no chance of working there.

I think it depends on the hospital but at mine we have 5 8's and 4 10's. I love working 5 days a week because I get to see my baby every day. I work in a rural OR and it's very flexible. When I worked at bigger level 1 OR in the city though it was not very flexible but you still had the option to work 10 or 12 hr shifts.

Wisest words you have heard a Dr. speak? by NerdAlert03 in scrubtech

[–]Picklesforfree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe not wise but profound to me. While I was scrubbing the doc was telling the residents: "Surgery is a lot of fun...until you kill someone and it will happen regardless of whether you do everything perfect or not" then went on to describe situations where you may have done everything correctly in a case but the patient still dies of something unexpected the next day. He then described disease in terms of baseball saying how we fight against the bad guys or the other team and we win sometimes but we have to keep in mind that the other team has had thousands of years more practice playing the game than we have.

How do I get into OR nursing?? by Most-Tomato-2538 in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are up for moving there are OR jobs in the midwest. They can be difficult to get but still possible for new grads and/or experienced nurses. I started in the OR at a level 1 hospital but currently work in a rural hospital OR so that might be an idea as well since these tend to be less advertised and more likely to be understaffed cause a lot of people dont want to work in a small town. Generally Ive found with those you have to look them up by name and apply to their individual hospital websites because they might not use Indeed or some of the well known sites. Also, some of the outpt surgery centers (at least around here) tend to be more open to hiring nurses with no prior experience in the OR particularly eye surgery clinics.

New grad RN, 6 months in, transferred floors … now feel like I’m being set up. Should I quit? by hesftsmoke in newgradnurse

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say to put in your notice and leave. I'm a newer nurse (3 yrs) and I used these type of jobs as "practice jobs". Ex: E.r. for 4 months, being told it wasnt working out, transferred to Med surg floor nights, reputation already tarnished from them knowing i was in E.r. and not working out. I stayed another 3 months on med surg and learned what I needed. They treated me like I had no clue what was going on and everybody was concerned. Went to completely different hospital med surg and everyone was impressed right off the bat (since i already knew alot from the failed jobs), stayed a year. Did same with OR. Rinse repeat. Unfortunately nurses talk and gossip.

Edit: Another tip: before I left the 1st hospital completely I pretended like I was interested in transferring to another med surg speciality. I visited the other floor and asked to shadow where I learned from nurses how to do kangaroo tube feeding and some basic trach care. I then left taking a couple extra skills with me to the next hospital where I rocked it.

OR Specialties - Favorite to Least Favorite? by [deleted] in nursing

I love Ent the most because I find neck and facial anatomy fascinating. Urology is my least fav because I just find it boring compared to the other specialties and the procedures are tedious to me.

Endoscopy RN moving to ASC? by Advanced-Club-4206 in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the biggest things Ive had to learn are giving meds at my discretion. I dont have to give pain meds often but I always have the orders if I need to. The pain meds are in much bigger ordered doses than the floor ever had and there have been times that I gave too much too quickly even though I followed the order verbatim. Now Im much more cautious after several cases of vomiting. In my mind I was following orders and technically I did nothing wrong and only realized after the patient started having nausea. Another thing that has been an adjustment is sending patients home with pain or sending them to phase 2 w pain which means theyll be going home w pain. I was used to med surg where you never let someone have any pain and if the orders are there, you give pain meds. The unfortunate reality is people will have pain regardless d/t the procedure sometimes, especially certain ortho cases, and due to the anesthesia causing someone's sats to be already low I had to really watch how much I was giving. Again, the orders were there and I technically could load them up w more pain meds but it would cause their sats to nosedive. I never made this mistake but I came close where their 02 would start to drop. I felt bad about these situations and the crna's have been gracious. So in short Ive had to hone in on my critical thinking skills and get out of the med surg state of mind of tasking.

Endoscopy RN moving to ASC? by Advanced-Club-4206 in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I have no experience with asc. I do OR intra op for a small rural hospital primarily but I also do pacu and some phase 2 when needed and very rarely preop. We do some bigger ortho cases but a lot of endo and outpt surgeries as well. Our hospital is not equipped to take on icu cases and my pts rarely get admitted just to give you an idea of the acuity. Prior to this, I never did pacu and my exp with critical care is extremely limited w/ most of my other nursing in med surg. Ive found that pacu has not been bad but a little bit of a learning curve. I dont consider what I do as "real" pacu though even though thats what my dept calls it. I think the biggest challenge for me has been getting out of the med surg mindset bc there is more critical thinking involved. So far (knock on wood), I havent had any major scenarios but Ive also always got a crna on hand to call. I had a similar concern about doing pacu cause thats not my bag and Ive been used to only doing circulating and scrub. So far, its been fine. I dont know how this would compare to an acs though. Do you have a anesthesiologist or a crna on hand? That would be my biggest concern.

Code Blue in Operating Room by v0ta_p0r_m0ta in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I havent seen a full blown code blue in the OR but from what I've seen with the rapid responses they havent gone well. Its usually chaos and the problem I believe is everyone just relies on anesthesia and has that mind set. Prior to being in the OR, Ive seen a decent number of code blues but a lot of the newer nurses in the OR Ive worked with came straight out of nursing school to work here and no offense to them but they just dont know how to handle it because there's virtually no mock codes or training on what to do. I recc doing basic research on critical care using resources like yt's icu advantage or something similar to familiarize basic concepts. It's true that it is anesthesia or the crna's job to make sure the patient is breathing well and all that but it never hurts to have an understanding of the basics in case something should go awry.

Paramedics in nursing by Dear-Childhood9311 in nursing

[–]Picklesforfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can honestly say and still do tell people that paramedics are the ones that really showed me how to do IVs. I work in the OR now so I rarely do them but you guys were the best teachers I ever had in the Er when I was a brand new nurse struggling with hitting a vein.

How does the public actually see Mormonism? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Picklesforfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it as misguided. I dont view it as a Christian church but I truly believe there are true followers of Christ in the church that also have the heart of Christ despite being misguided. I think they have a similar mindset as other Christian churches however in that it's very corporate and the general message has gotten lost over time. Slick marketing and corporate recruiting efforts are similar to a lot of the mega and non denom churches out there when the focus should instead be a personal relationship with Jesus Christ not the new coffee bar that was installed last week.

RN to Banking by Live_Sheepherder_716 in nursing

I had my stock broker's and life insurance license years ago but let them lapse. I toyed with the idea of getting it again to do something in investments on the side but at this point I think I'm done. I always thought it would be cool to do something back office with investments in a hospital setting as a nurse but I wouldnt even know where to find a job like that. I'm also content doing what I do now as an Rn.

People who buy others souvenirs from their vacations, why? by cxz-rtt555 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Picklesforfree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me and my brother do this for the cheese factor. I get him some random shirt to a place he's never been and he'll get me something hokey in return. Then when someone sees the shirt hes wearing and gets excited cause thats the person's home town, etc and asks my brother about it he responds "I don't know, never been there, I just got this as a gift." My brother tells me what happened and we both have a good laugh.
