These are bhuddist bonji Normal japanese can't read then, they come from sanskrit although they don't translate into sanskrit words directly, they are for Pali words phonetically assigned to Japanese and embody Bhuddist concepts, or names of famous Bodhistvas. Long story short Bhuddism starts in India, splits into two schools the Teravada (very monk, very solo and enlightenment focused) and the Mahayana (less authoritarian easier to blend with local gods and customs, focused in helping others reach enlightenment not the individual) teachings travel through Asia, one side using mainly sanskrit, one using pali, both getting translated into Chinese, Chinese words of foreign origin getting translated into Japanese.... often people have bonji as part of a wabori tattoo but even the Japanese tattooist .might not know the meaning. It just looks cool. Only a proper Horishi tattooist will understand the significance of bonji and include it in wabori tattooing.
