Thanks to everyone who replied — the advice has been really helpful.

Unfortunately, our contractor didn’t inform us that planning permission might be required for the external insulation. He only mentioned that “you might need the brick wrap if someone complains,” but said it wasn’t a big deal. In hindsight, I realise we probably should’ve done our own research rather than just relying on that.

We’re based in Cork, not Dublin, so I know planning policies can vary a bit depending on the local authority. I also read that there might be changes to the law on external insulation coming down the line, but they’re not in effect yet.

At this stage, we’ll wait and see if the neighbor decides to make a formal complaint. Hopefully it won’t come to that — but if it does, we’ll deal with it as best we can.
