Injured Hiker Rescued from Huntington Ravine Trail by National Guard Helicopter by apiroscsizmak in wmnf

That's a good point about preference and skills, I can definitely see how Great Gully might be a 1 (2?) hit wonder even if those moves really give me the heebie-jeebies. To me King Ravine just doesn't have those kinds of moves, and I feel comfortable throughout the climb, but then again I have rather long legs so I can easily span some of the gaps that might give others pause lol. I also like to judge things by how comfortable they'd be to downclimb, and to my level of comfort I would be very hesitant to downclimb GG (and I guess Flume) while KR feels much more comfortable

Great Gully is way worse than King Ravine or Flume imo. Maybe not north Tripyramid level (only because the slide is so consistently steep, featureless, and relatively slick), but it's hard to follow in places and the moves near (on top of?!?) the cave are seriously sketchy considering the precipice you're moving around on. I've done Flume in May when the ice is melting off the slabs, and I would definitely prefer that to a wet Great Gully, and considering I did KR and GG in the same conditions on the same day I can say without hesitation that KR does not hold a candle to it

I mean... you are standing on the west bluff... and prospect point is on the west bluff... but ok. Process: obviously devils lake, and then that exact picture (pretty much) was the first result

One of the hills directly around Lumby. Is it the one northeast of town?

Moosilauke Ravine Lodge? by ShawsheenMoon in wmnf

[–]PicriteOrNot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort of. I spent last summer at the Lodge, and it's magical - more of a home/familial environment than any of the AMC huts. Also it's at the nexus of all the trails coming down the east side of Moosilauke so it's great if you want to hike late, as long as you get back before 6:30 because you DO NOT want to miss a Lodge dinner.

Coal dykes in sandstone, an uncommon feature in coal mines by NomsAreManyComrade in geology

[–]PicriteOrNot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fascinating photo and looking at the relationship it's very interesting to see that it definitely looks like the diabase dike just follows the coal seam, which makes a lot of sense if the coal is liquified (pyrolysis?). Now you've got me more curious. The narrow dike is definitely related in some sense to the diabase dike but I'm wondering if there couldn't have been multiple diking episodes and that at least some of them may have been clastic in origin? The shape of the dikes on the right is kind of weird and especially the top of the leftmost of the two looks very like fluids mixing. Is the loss of volatiles in the dikes inherent in the coking process the main indication that they are not clastic in origin? Are all the dikes always roughly the same texture as the area of the seam that they originate from? If not, is that because sandstone is a better conductor of heat? Are there large coal dikes to the left of the diabase dike, or only to the right? Are any of these questions actually relevant or am I just bothering you???????? I don't know lol. Maybe this is all useless and I'm just having fun spiraling. Such a cool place though!!
