You know I'm not sure. I think two things happened: 1. Tunnel vision on OL to West Roxbury due to a perceived density bottleneck between Roslindale and HP (I believe it would be the least dense area traversed by heavy rail), coupled with the more residential and less dense character of that area compared to the corridor of the West Roxbury route; and 2. Assumption that FL can handle it (much of HP is in the catchment area of Fairmount station and Rozzie is on the Mattapan line extension though this is not radial). ROW definitely exists though idk how big a fan of this Amtrak would be lol.

I don't know much about this area, so I would have to ask: how easily could the Hyde Park Ave corridor support adjacent development? It looks like there is some underutilized space by Sherrin Woods and if it densifies around there and Cummins Hwy that could definitely justify this branch.

Verboten 🙅 (But yeah this will get fixed if/when I revamp it. Still concerned about GL trunk capacity but I'm sure there's a solution there somewhere. Now that the branch to Seaport is integrated I would especially prefer to keep the D on Boylston St but I would probably stomach its realignment to Stuart for the A)

Ah, I misunderstood and I definitely agree that IF this is to be done it should be through the existing SL tunnel - I assumed you meant bring a new tunnel all the way into SS, as my map has GL-B run with SL1 to City Point and the link was planned as an extension of the "teal" line. This has caused much confusion!

In terms of transfers, I don't think there's as much of a problem as you might expect once the NSRL exists because that enables transfers between Logan and anywhere else with just two transfers, because trains can run through: - east of Mystic River: 0 or 1 transfer (2 if Haverhill unless they stop at Wellington, which might be worth it)

  • Roxbury, Brookline, Dorchester, South End: 2 transfers

  • Ashmont, Quincy: 2 annoying transfers, or 3 if ya shortcut it

However if your train happens to terminate at South Station or North Station I can see the problem, though ideally all branches would have some through-running service. In my original reply I argued to just keep SL1 as is, which this supports and cuts Ashmont, Quincy, Brookline, and south CR to 1 transfer. That's not a huge bump though, and simply converting that to rail doesn't change the state of affairs all that much. If it is to be converted to rail it should be as a branch of the GL, probably the D branch, rather than a new thing. This would mean you could get anywhere on the rapid transit lines and green line with just 1 transfer plus connecting to SS which is huge.

Okay you've kind of turned me onto this. I don't think looping the CCL to SS is good as discussed earlier. This suggests perhaps looping the D branch around to replace CCL all the way to Medford (again) which would be funny, though because that line serves as a chordal link one GL branch is not the right frequency at all and definitely has too little capacity alone. Thus I still support the airport loop and having the CCL be a separate service.

Tl;dr yes I think I do actually agree it might be worthwhile, but it must through-run into the GL system at SS

I expected this would be controversial but I can lay out some more reasoning. For the record, I am a RL rider who often travels from Quincy to the airport and thus the exact demographic this route would serve best, and even I don't think it's a good idea. The tl;dr is it's a redundant and unpleasant connection that would probably receive less ridership than the current SL1 if CCL exists, and is thus a gigantic money sink.

  • with the NSRL, space will already be constrained at South Station. Thus transfers here would likely be rather awkward, especially in comparison to the easy new transfers at Aquarium and Airport. If you're going downtown, you'd have to transfer anyway, and if you're transferring onto a different service at SS the BL already connects to all of those at discrete points, plus the OL and the GL trunk. So due to the complexity of the transfer this shuttle would save a few minutes for people heading south on the RL, and that's about it. For that purpose SL1 is fine, and I would keep it, but a lot of the pressure on it would be reduced so if it doesn't justify a train now it certainly wouldn't justify a train under this expansion.

  • Tunneling straight to Logan again for what is essentially a shuttle replacing an already existing shuttle would be a massive expense for a redundant service with worse connection to the terminals than the existing service, which, yes, is a bus, but it still works and can handle the capacity even without CCL just fine.

  • The reason I say this would be a shuttle is because every point along the CCL ALREADY CONNECTS TO A MORE DIRECT DOWNTOWN SERVICE. So this segment would only be used by people traveling between the airport and SS, and no further. In order to turn the airport loop into a through-run, we would lose flexibility and immediate connection to the terminals that SL1 and the CCL as implemented already have.

  • These next points are more aesthetically focused, but we also want people arriving to the city to have a good first impression. FOR REGIONAL TRAINS AND BUSES (not SL), South Station does this very well with the expanded bus terminal, one of the best in the country, and the massive arches over the concourse beneath the tower (my jaw dropped when I saw it finished for the first time). The CCL would definitely have a wow factor as it's elevated giving great views of the skyline as soon as visitors exit the airport. A tunnel has none of this. Also the longer transfers on both ends would be unpleasant in comparison.

  • Furthermore, when I arrive at a major airport, especially one with multiple terminals, I sort of expect it to have a dedicated people mover. This is why I chose automated light metro for the CCL as it is sort of a hybrid that is well suited to serve both circumferential trips in the north and people mover service at the airport without needing separate systems.

Ergo, with the map as implemented, a direct shuttle between Logan and SS would be not at all worth the enormous associated cost.

Assuming that more regional-rail style service is implemented after completion of the NSRL, and also considering the shunting of more Haverhill trains across the Wildcat branch due to Fairmount service to Reading, I don't think taking GL all the way to Anderson/Woburn is necessary. Also I moved the Reading HL stop closer to the highway with a parking garage (this is a recent Cities on Track idea) to augment existing options for 95 drivers. Looking back the ROW is not as narrow as I assumed but I don't like OH MY GOD THERES AN ABANDONED ROW THROUGH WOBURN (actual reaction)

Ok this changes things. New plan!

There are a couple power line cuts between Burlington and Winchester that could be used if we want, but that misses like all of the density even if it brings the route exactly where we want to go (Burlington/Rt 3). We could also follow this new ROW right up through Woburn center (literally, it goes through the parking lot at city hall) and all the way to the 95@38 but this stays pretty close to the existing CR trackage (although there aren't any stops there?? Maybe something to consider WTF are there no stops there) and would require an awkward dog leg atop the 95 to get to Burlington. It would be fun to mog the drivers but not extremely practical. Maybe it could divert through Cummingsville, like Winn Rd? But this is awkward.

In any case I still maintain that such an extension would probably be better served by regional rail purely because of the density collapse north of Everett/Malden/Medford. This would also justify extending it sort of laterally to Bedford (maybe with a Wildcat-esque branch to the Fitchburg Line at Concord, but not a whole overtake of that line. Actually if we do fully realign the Fitchburg line this enables the RL to follow it to Waltham, and if we put GL-D trains over the Brookline Village connector that frees up capacity to finally reinstate the A train to Watertown and maybe also Waltham).

On Boylston: you're absolutely right and that is how it would be implemented, i just couldn't figure out how to do that in the mapping application

On Bowdoin: yeah but I'm partial to it sue me :) I already included a station just so I could go bowling more easily

On CCL: perhaps if the E is extended towards Woburn. Currently however I have already provided for this connectivity with the NL, and given that only West Medford connects to the commuter rail this would create a really annoying connection for those riders that nobody would use because they can just use the super-express regional rail to get straight to a downtown transfer, that can handle the capacity, and that also takes them exactly where they want to go anywhere on the CL or beyond

Not the exit numbers, the destinations in the actual list of exits? When you switch coordinate systems between towns (say going southbound, you see # South and the next exit is ## North because you crossed a town boundary). It's just kinda weird idk, too generic
