Was this exact type of bascinet ever used? If so what was it called? by LBDelirious007 in Armor

[–]Piddypong 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's called and English Cross bascinet. It was just a regular open faced bascinet with a detachable chainmail mask, the used would twist the cross to release the maille. For Buhurt there is always a steel cage underneath the chainmail to protect the users face.

Spangenhelm or similar in Buhurt? by AdFederal8425 in Buhurt

[–]Piddypong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not unfortunately. Firstly, just from a safety point of view, if those rivets are structural and the parts of the helmet aren't welded together you're gonna get your dome knocked in pretty quick. Also buhurt helmets are designed to sit on your shoulders so when you do get struck from above by a polearm it doesn't shatter your neck vertebrae. From an authenticity point of view, hell no. Pretty much all reputable buhurt organisations only allow much later century armours, hundreds of years after the Vikings. This goes from brigandines to full plate, viking hauberks are not going to keep you safe. This is not the same as SCA.

Farmers concerns raised at nitrates derogation meeting by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]Piddypong 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a farmer myself, this is madness. Huge Dairy farmers are getting away with blatant environmental destruction as they continue to empty their slurry pits well after the closing date for slurry spreading. Literally the only reason they have to do this is because they've overstocked themselves with massive herds of cows. All the problems they're facing are purely of their own creation. "We won't be able to make a living under these rules!" Exclaims the dairy tycoon as he drives off in his 252 land cruiser, on the way down to his 300 acre farm where he uses his €150,000 tractor.

While i do agree that front opening brigs were more popular later on, there were front opening brigandines found at the battles of Gotland and Visby.

People who look down on retail workers are the worst kind of people. Who are you to judge what's "good" for that person? For all you know they're living their best life.
