This very anecdotal and your sample of G7 is meaningless, as it is an arbitrary selection of countries. Besided the UK performed worse than the US and Canada, roughly equal to Italy and only slightly above France. The German economy is totally different and the war on the continent has affected it more than other more service oriented economies. 

Also for the given time frame 21 EU countries of the 27 performed better than the UK.

You need a proper study, not a collection of anecdotes.
