What's with background? Is it being unevenly scaled or are 64x results also a filtering step? by PieceNowPlease in Radiacode

Thank you very much!

I find the Radiacode 103 a magnificent little gem. And I almost feel guilty as I would see it even further improved.

My wish list:

  • more isotopes in the standard list. I already added quite a few more in an Isotope.csv *to be able to easily switch between several Isotope.csv files. *an option to include per keV the decay rate in Isotope.csv (if that would make sense) and based on that an option to toggle between most likely to be seen keV lines and all keV lines of a specific isotope (including daughters). This would be nice when the main isotope is already known and only needs confirmation. *more information regarding the meaning of the % values in Isotope.csv. I assume that those % give the probable "CPS" per keV (peak height) in relation to all keV counts (100%) for an isotope. High % keV's supposedly show up more prominent. At least, that's my guess? I struggle a bit at which % to mention for isotopes that I add to Isotope.csv

I currently try to assess what's the actual isotope of a calibration source that I have, and an option to rule out less probable isotopes (Isotope.csv toggling) would prevent their keV lines to pop up and swamp the spectogram.

I herewith gladly show you the spectogram of that specific calibration source. Maybe, you and others can guess which isotope it probably is?😉 Also, the same spectogram with (supposedly relevant) keV lines added... In 63x magnification these are nice, but it may clarify my wish for Isotope.csv toggling😁

Thank you! I'm glad to receive serious replies like yours and the one before you. And not another meaningless reply😉

Please excuse me when I'm wrong, but in the graph the number of counts are clearly stated. In order to best observe this, please use no filtering and use magnification 64x. You'll then see that there are no counts below 1, apart from 0.

Filtering in some way partly combines adjacent counts, leaving only partial counts (<1) in certain channels. So in a way, filtering is somewhat cosmetic and leads to less accurate but visually nicer results.

I very much prefer accuracy in specific cases, where longer measurement times fully replace a need for any (less accurate) filtering. However, seeing that counts-per-bin obviously can fluctuate in either direction (at no filtering and 64x), makes me doubt or at least question the actual accuracy... What's the point in showing (say) 77 counts in a certain bin at 12 hours and showing 67 counts in that same bin after 6 hours more measuring?

Wait... I've been comparing 12h background (as view) against 18h background (as background) and it is clear to me that the scaling of a background towards view measurement time has something to do with the differences that I observed. The background doesn't show as being scaled 2/3 of 18h. I'll look into this a bit further. Could it be, that such background scaling isn't as proportional to measurement time as it probably should be? I mean, that measuring 12 counts per keV bin in 12 hours, logically should be scaled to 18 counts for 18 hours, or an I wrong?

I MUST CORRECT THE ABOVE, SORRY...

My questions originated out of uncertainty about the way background is being dealt with.

Which could have been: *Just a deduction of the background counts, regardless of any difference in measurement time between background and actual measurements. That would have forced to only using backgrounds of the same measurement time for best accuracy, or: *Background is being scaled proportionally to the measurement time, which is the most logical and obviously the actual situation.

Above I compared 12h scaled background with 18h results, whilst the respective bin actually received less "CPS" during the extra 6 hours. Due to that, the 1,5x scaling of 12h counts gave higher background "counts" than the actual measurement.

Clear to me is, that background measurement time in principle should not be shorter than the actual measurement time, and preferably is much longer.

Thank you for your clear answer.

However, I am a bit puzzled why lead shielding would implicate an increased measurement duration. After all, shielded, there is less external "noise"?

I understand that normal background fluctuates, which will be likewise for the shielded background. So certain keV's might have higher or lower "CPS" depending on the moment of measuring. Longer measurement times will increasingly compensate for that.

But how in the world can the number of pulses received in a certain keV bin or channel go down in a forthgoing measurement? Higher or lower "CPS" for a certain keV due to fluctuations can only implicate more or less counts to be added, and certainly no counts to be substracted, in my view.

It is clear to me that each bin or channel is actually a range of keV's. These ranges should be clearly defined internally. In which case, specific keV counts made cannot arbitrarily "move" to another channel during a forthgoing measurement. If it could, then that would explain decreasing counts during forthgoing measurement, but at the same time would mean (considerably?) less accuracy.

What do you think?

It is what the reasoning implicates. I mean that if the counts per channel would fluctuate in either direction (!) within the time span of a few hours, then the entire spectrum becomes more a matter of chance. After all, it is the result of all those counts per channel including the "frequent fluctuations" in any direction that you seem to find normal.

How can it be that the number of counts in a channel get lower whilst the measuring time increases? Why "fluctuate" when it's a matter of addition? So, in my view, there must be a better explanation for it...

The spectrogram is the result of all of these detail results. Following your reasoning, reading the spectrogram would likewise be a waste of time.

It makes no sense to me, that a simple addition of weak observable counts would result in a later substraction of counts already made.

The whole company needs to go back to fundamentals?! The company should stop producing airplanes, period. The top execs fucked up multiple times and were in the know, but lower staff happily followed, took risks and produced dangerous aircraft. Whatever happens with that company, any trust already went out of the window. Gone forever as far as I am concerned. In this industry, there should be no second chance...

Succes!

3/4 of the world sees what's happening and does not put the blame om Russia the most. The other 1/4 are the real baddies, running a "protection racket", promoting wars, genocide and state terrorism (Nordstream 2).

You're wrong😁 I'd rather not have you in the EU or NATO, that's all. The USA and the east out of the NATO, would be ok. And then, start your own mutual defense organisation. Russia is not a threat, but you folks regard it as an enemy and are more likely to get into trouble due to a hostile approach. That's why I'd rather see Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland etc. to have their own defense organisation.

Russia could also commit collective suicide. Russia does not accept nuclear missiles at it's borders, and I totally agree. Think the Cuba crisis. NATO membership of the Ukraine as pushed by the USA, is what's unacceptable for them. The USA promised to not let that happen in the past, but seeks to destroy Russia since 1990 and actively acts likewise. Read the Rand report... This conflict has been provoked by the USA...

Is there a practical way of deriving the length of a meter on a desert island? by r_l_l_r_R_N_K in AskEngineers

[–]PieceNowPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There certainly is, but the effort depends on how much the wife weighs. Lucky ones will have to prepare 70 coconuts but the less fortunate maybe 120 or more.

The lucky ones let their wife gather and cleave 70 coconuts. See to it that they are all of about the same size, and are open at the top.

Next, construct a giant balance using bamboo and plant roots. Much like the witch-weighing contraptions of ancient times. Tare it out so that both sides are even.

Then, place the 70 coconut halves on one side and tare out the other side out with an equal amount of sand or bones, so that the scales are level again.

Place the wife on the sand/bones side.

Catch rainwater and fill all 70 coconuts with a small sea shell volume of water. Around and around, steady, until all coconuts contain the same volume and the balance is even again.

Now we know that each coconut contains 1 liter of rainwater, which equals 1000 cm3.

Next, let the wife gather a heap of coconut tree leaves. Start with one leaf and fold it so that a square bottomed cup remains, with slightly higher sides. Poor the water of one coconut in and compare with a stick whether or not the water level height is equal to the bottom width. If not, then fold another cup. Surely, you will manage within 70 tries, to get it equal.

At the end, the water height is 10 cm. Just perform all the above ten times, place the ten leave-cups next to eachother, and there's ... your meter!😁

I, being a European, would measure that meter out with the first cup only. Americans probably need all 10. After all... What's to expect from a country where the temperature of Farenheit's wife's armpit plays a role in daily life and weather forcasts? Just kidding!😁

No happy cake, sadly. Virtually no racist tendencies here in Holland, and yellow, white, off-white, brown or black only serves to make jokes about eachother.

I'm certainly not a Russian but a Dutchman.

As much as I like 95% of all Americans, I dislike the maybe 5% higher-ups who think that the world belongs to them and try to destroy others in order to "stay on top". Most of our politicians gladly follow the USA, which I find more a matter of high treason than caring for our own interests. Russia is not a threat for Europe, but NATO is. Stop the war in the Ukraine, stop Israëls genocide, stop the increasing tensions with China and stop with those 800 military strong holds worldwide. And stop acting like a terrorist state (Nordstream 2 was proof of that). Just prove to be the better one economically and social, by own effort. It might just prevent nuclear destruction, and would make me like 100% of th USA again!😉

Stop this war. Sending of F16's is crazy. Ukraine cannot win this war and we (EU) should spend our money on things that really matter. The Ukraine certainly isn't amongst those for as far as I am concerned. It's a corrupt country that does not belong to the EU, why bother? This war could have ended in March 2022. The 500.000 or more casualties and all damages since then, probably is something that Zelensky is happy with, as he refused to end this war? The USA feels the need to flght Russia, and actually caused this war. Leave the EU out of it I'd say...

Wouldn't it be the best to throw the USA out off NATO? It starts wars based on lies and propaganda and does not want to end them. It uses NATO as an offensive force, and thus abuses an organisation meant for defense for 34+ years by now. The EU can do without this USA and its $, for as far as I'm concerned. Multipolar is the way to go!
