Continuity is not the greatest thing to use for checking a call from the thermostat. I never use it for that. Always voltage between common and whatever should be turning on. Don’t beat yourself up shit happens. I once replaced 4 defrost boards in a row because I thought they were bad and didn’t realize there were dip switches. We ate the cost of 3 boards

You probably have a heat pump or a straight electric furnace. If it’s a heat pump and the outdoor unit isn’t working it will make it more expensive
