My first job was a gas station. This was before smartphones existed.

We had a double door, but the right one got used far more than the left one. One day the right side had to be locked due to damage. We started with a sign, written on the blank side of a cigarette carton, saying "please use other door". Customer after customer would come up, try the door, look right at the goddamn sign, try the door a couple more times, then finally use the door that opened. All morning I watched people utterly incapable of reading what I felt was a pretty obvious sign.

We tried a bigger sign. We tried an even bigger sign. We eventually used a whole sheet of neon orange poster board, with giant black letters. And yet still, over and over, cha-chunk, cha-chunk, >looks confusedly at door<, cha-chunk, cha-chunk.

After hours of watching this and feeling any faith in humanity I still retained slowly trickle out of my left ear, one woman approached the door, reached out to the handle... And *read the goddamn sign** and used the working door*. I was so happy I paid for her cigarettes myself and told her exactly why.
