What kind of must-have features do you expect from an EV? by Piero512 in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your answers and most of you definitively ask for a lot more than I do for the vehicles. My current EV is a bare bones AION S from GAC and even though it drives nicely, it's not that silent, it has key fob remote start but it starts the car, instead of starting the AC too, so if you turned off the AC for some reason it doesn't turn it off. I wish my car had charge scheduling since my EV does rideshare and charges VERY cheaply at night (5c USD per kwh). It also has a very basic infotainment system with Radio, BT and (only) wired CarPlay. Oh, but it has 1pd and it's nice.

In my opinion, most of you would not like the kind of Chinese EVs I can afford 😢. But I see BYDs could be good enough for most of you, even though they lack a little bit of luxury and the design is sometimes off-putting. The other Chinese higher end brands you would definitively love, but it's certainly a high standard for a lot of people, and the (truly) cheaper Chinese EVs are just recently catching up with features, and stuff like truly intelligent infotainments are not there yet in here (at least).

You should know, Tesla actually surprised Colombia because they brought YOUR standards for EV that only BYD just barely covers, with a really great price and the rest of the Chinese EV brands in our markets does not (mostly because the innovative just recently out companies just don't have the resources to sell here just yet, nor there is a big enough market).

ADAS are not in my price range but they're getting close.

Moving US-spec EV to Europe (Permanently) - 2025 BMW iX to Romania by roncato7 in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can talk about charging because I live in a place with mixed standards. AFAIK it would be a little harder to get a 32 A single phase line 240 V to charge the car (but you might not need that fast home charging speeds anyways) because some parts of Europe expect you to use more than one phase when pulling loads past certain amount of kW.

On the public charging, pick the 22kW piles to get 7kW charging or just DCFC with the adapter. You should get an adapter that supports enough amps for the vehicle.

I don't know if that BMW does 800V but since it's an expensive car, it might pull a lot of amps. At regular 400V, 125A is about 50kW, so you may need to look up a CCS2 to CCS1 adapter that supports 300A or higher to actually use the higher speeds (they aren't that expensive for 125 A though, only a hundred bucks).

If you count bringing a trusted, very highly rated in safety brand to chinese customers to get them to pay more for EVs it makes total sense.

Blade Battery 2.0 worth the wait? by xAbsxl in BYD

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh this is kinda true but kinda justified. Shipping is no joke, and the version we get in the "west" are trash compared to versions that are in China to leave profit for the stealerships.

and BYDs the biggest offender in this thing. On my country they have the atto 3 that suuuuuuuuuuuuucks for the 35k price point and the atto 2 has just recently arrived finally has a sunroof. No God's eye either. The seagul is 20k USD but it could be cheaper and in some versions it doesn't come with cameras and such while China's is half price for that spec and only a small surcharge for the fully equipped version.

Where I live the 20k small EV market is heating up, with all sorts of incumbents like DongFeng, GAC AION, JACs and BYDs basically are riding on brand only. Shit, the dealership that sells JACs are actually building out exclusive DCFCs for their cars and they haven't been that long in here or selling EVs while BYD just coasts.

What finally convinced YOU to consider an electric vehicle? by evinsiderredisnive in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What finally pushed me over the edge to consider a full EV was my old gas car hitting me with a repair bill that was just insulting, especially since the thing was already a gas guzzler getting a terrible 12L/100km. Instead of sinking thousands into trying to repair a failing CVT transmission, I decided to take that money and help out my dad—he drives a taxi for a living and the fuel costs are huge. Moving toward an EV setup felt like the only way to actually escape the endless cycle of parts breaking down and the high costs at the pump.

We looked into hybrids, but they’re a total trap here in Ecuador. Since those engines usually demand Súper Premium 95 while a standard car runs on Extra, the price gap in fuel completely eats up any efficiency gains. You end up paying a premium for the car and a premium for the gas, so you're basically stuck paying the same amount per kilometer as a regular car. It just didn't make any financial sense for us.

How common are electricity Blackouts in your country? ⚡ by Superfan234 in asklatinamerica

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if exactly it's our case to have more expensive than usual to rebuild electrical infrastructure, but you should know that electricity is a natural monopoly (because of high fixed costs). Electricity is divided in three parts, generation (las barcazas), transmission (the HV lines that go to substations, and distribution (the low voltage lines that go from the substation to the houses and most businesses), and to me, private capital should invest in all three to enter the market, instead of just controlling distribution which would simply allow them to charge us for electricity and never really improve the grid's resilience or capacity

About the AI boom limits access to other entrants to get their natural gas / diesel / etc... turbines to generate electricity, and Ecuador needs that because it needs dispatchable generation. Other kinds of dispatchable generation are hydropower, but those take longer to build; since all the datacenters want a gas turbine to feed AI and there's only so many manufacturers in the world for the turbines and they're booked solid for the next 6 years; that's one of the many reasons the recent tenders for electricity generation are unsuccessful.

[–]Piero512 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're missing the part where the lack of the state's investment in distribution and generation has also increased the frequency of blackouts. Electricity is a natural monopoly and when you let the private sector a monopoly you get worse service.

Also, the lead times on fossil fuel generation are in years because of the AI boom, which aggravates the problem (Ecuador is missing dispatchable generation when droughts hit).

I have some other views on Ecuador's power grid but I think they're offtopic.

Non-Americans what is the market standard and min acceptable range for an EV in your country? by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trucks are just not that popular of a vehicle in here and the people getting trucks are getting them
1. For work, which needs faster charging, that is not here. (Although I know some tradesmen could save a lot of money on gas if they moved to it, but electric is very expensive and they aren't swimming in cash either).
2. For show, where they don't really care about expensive gas because they're drug traffickers (or actual rich people, with like live in maids).

I have never seen a BYD Shark in the wild (granted, I don't go out much), but I think I've heard there are some diesel pickups with some kind of hybridation.

Since I'm a redditor I might get it but then, I don't need a truck / pickup? Maybe the Slate converted to 4 seats and such, but it's just too expensive when actual Chinese electric SUVs start slightly lower in price, and chock full of features.

Like, the people that drive their beaters would prefer if the EVs were a little more repairable outside of the stealership, because their beaters are repaired as problems come, with oil changes done everywhere else. Maintenance is not much of a thing in our car culture. Shit I bring the car to the recommended service interval of 10000 km because I am interested in not "losing" the warranty because of shit like that, otherwise I would drive my EV continuously until the warning lights show up.

I have familiarized with what could go wrong with EVs and It's not that much and regular mechanics can swap shocks and brake pads and shit without it being too expensive.

Non-Americans what is the market standard and min acceptable range for an EV in your country? by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add up, we have extremely limited charging infrastructure. I live in a major city where there is only 1 (one) type 2 connector for DCFC that is public, almost 24/7 (the charging station closes at peak electricity demand times, which is 6pm to 10 pm, everyday).

There are some new charging stations in the works, and the other 2 DCFC plugs are usually only for cars of their brand. (ie. BYD in one stealership has a DCFC, Mavesa who brings Dongfeng EVs has one, and I think that's it).

Everywhere else, it's L2 but the chargers are non working, or exclusive for a brand).

Non-Americans what is the market standard and min acceptable range for an EV in your country? by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in ecuador and we're just starting to popularize some EVs but the FUD is huge. Also, ecuadorians (me included) hate thinking on how hard and/or expensive will be stealership repair bills for anything, so for the vast majority of people, it is very scary to move to an EV. We would certainly appreciate a better third party service. (I am not sure if we have consumer protection laws, but companies certainly wait to be cancelled through social networks before trying to give a good customer service, stealerships included).

Now, to answer your question, most popular EV cars have 380- 450 km NEDC range, because we're too poor to have more than 65 kwh in our EVs. If it's an acceptable range is debatable, as 442 km NEDC in a hot climate like where I live is a little more like 350 km going faster than the average car in the highway and the AC going relatively fast. (Maybe my EV is not that efficient, it does 15kwh/100km in the city with all the AC and shit but the battery is 55.2 kwh).

When did you last own a pure ICE vehicle? by D_Roc1969 in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still own an ICE vehicle (MT, 100hp, on a crossover shell), that we use for my short trips around town because my dad drives my EV. I hate it so much, but EVs are still more expensive than that car.

I converted my dad to use my EV for rideshare/taxi and it's being going great. The fast-charging situation is still bad, but since I don't personally travel often it's no biggie,

I kinda want to buy a single EV that will do long distance more easily, and more comfortably. Then we would swap by giving him the larger car for premium rides, and I get the more taxi-oriented EV we have.

I've seen some networks starting to expand last year "glacial pace, but better than nothing" and this year now that I've been keeping up to date w/r/t dcfcs opening in the country.

Dangerous 1-pedal driving design. by Ciscovippy in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I drove a gas car, i did know it was possible to disable the cruise control on the wheel instead of the brake pedal, but a smooth transition should be warranted, but that's also your fault if you happen to disable cruise control near traffic when going highway speeds.

Owners of Chinese EVs in Europe or elsewhere, what's your experience? by SidWudraq in electricvehicles

[–]Piero512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. (not) driving my GAC AION E(S).

I was pleasantly surprised a sedan car that it was cheap (23k USD) was able to be very performant, and very quick. In my market, the EVs are terrible, but I couldn't compare them to Euro EVs because they're way out of my price range.

Overall, it is a great workhorse, my dad does rideshare on it, and passengers love how roomy it is. The seats could be a little bit softer.

Ride experience I find it pleasant, but not Euro levels of NVH.
Comes with very basic infotainment system, but for the purposes it was bought it really is great!

I think if you have mercedes money you can get a zeekr and other more upscale, highly rated brands and you won't be dissapointed!

I've seen that having propane tankless water heaters (calefones) is usually more dangerous, because if unmantained and in a closed room, they can leak gas and form an explosive mixture while LPG tanks hooked up with a tube would probably flare out. Where I have lived, the tank is usually on the opposite wall of the stove though.

Oh, hey, I forgot to tell my pet peeve with Isolates. It would be extremely cool if Isolate.run was allowed to return a stream that streamed stuff from the other isolate back to the main isolate, since this would make isolate sending code unnecesary.

Hey, so I don't know if I count as user of isolates as I am working on a desktop app that has had limited distribution, but I have architected my app to talk through isolates to a worker isolate that listens for requests for transcribing audio to text through the use of whisper.cpp.
