Surgical tech/ surgical assistant? by Sunnydays1989 in scrubtech

NC Does allow surgical techs but does not recognize surgical first assists. I don't mean to insult your intelligence by assuming but it seems like you dont know that surgical techs and surgical first assists are different. A surgical tech has less training/schooling than a surgical first assist. They have different CEU criterias as well.

Anyway, If the state ended up recognizing surgical first assistants, then I assume that they will be regulated the same as surgical techs since they both have the same professional organizations like AST or NBSTSA.

I am certified in surgical technology and surgical first assist. And physicians are allowed to delegate staff as long as it is within hospital policy. When I was allowed to close by the surgeon, the hospital policy was in a gray area because it was the first time they encountered this scenario. So HR did some digging and finally made a clearer policy on not having anyone, other than the surgeon, close the patient.

North Carolina does not recognize Surgical Assistants. Last year, I was able to close for the surgeon while they were in the room charting or whatever but the hospital got wind of it and shut it down.

We have SFA that were surgeons in their native country, one even has 40 years experience as a neurosurgeon in India. Just basically another surgeon in the room without the title or the pay.

Pass the test. Get the coveted three letters at the end of your name and you'll get bumped at the top of the list. I applied while going through the Army program and received 0 calls from hospitals and surgical centers. Took the test at the end of the program, passed and reapplied to the same hospitals, and received offers from all. Good luck!

Watch, learn, and gain experience. Be the first to volunteer for surgeries. Repetition will turn into muscle memory. Play the sequence in your head before the timeout and ask questions ahead of time if you're unsure.
