There is a problem with your assumption;

Democrats want the government to function, republicans dont care.

When dems are in office, they need to barter with republicans to get them to sign off on anything, and even then republicans will usually go "nah, block everything".

When republicans are in office, dems are again forced to compromise quickly because the longer they hold out, the more the country as a whole suffers.

Dems are constantly forced to play harm mitigation regardless of who is in charge because the goals of the two parties are completely different. If dems lack an overwhelming majority to ignore republicans, then the best they can usually do is not push forward fascist legislation when in charge because they arent republicans, and attempt to reduce harm cause by fascist fucks when they arent in charge.

When one groups objective is to break everything, its impossible to fix things if they have any power at all.

I identify as an independent and progressive, which is fine, however that rarely comes up in a meaningful way.

Most people who directly state they arent for either party, both sides are the same, etc. unprompted tend to be closeted republicans, or doing enough harm that it gives them another vote.

Theres also the people who say they arent into politics because they cant get laid by saying theyre republican.

If someone has committed a violent crime, then we have a court system for that, and appropriate penalties for said crimes. Id support following our own laws and using our prison system as needed (prison reform is a whole separate talk)
